As the 2005 model year began, Ford's Escape Hybrid was the most fuel-efficient SUV. A two-wheel-drive Escape Hybrid is rated at 36/31 mpg by the EPA; it uses a 2.3-liter 133-horsepower 4-cylinder engine mated to a 94-horsepower electric motor. Only a CVT is available. The Escape Hybrid can be had with four-wheel drive too, but the fuel economy rating falls to 33/29 mpg."
