Diesel trucks are made for pulling and there’s no better way to flex some diesel power by doing some good old-fashioned sled pulling! The National Hot Rod Diesel Association (NHRDA), a sanctioned body of the NHRA, had their first pull of the season at Berthusen Park, in Lynden, WA. With the newly revised rules, and new classes, sled pulling has become super competitive. No single truck walked away with a victory. In the Street Modified Class, a mere three feet separated the top three finishers!

The three classes introduced for this season include:
  • Super Modified: Almost anything goes – Twin Turbos, big tires, and anything you can throw at the engine, including Nitrous oxide and propane.

  • Street Modified: Daily driven diesels with some power adders – aftermarket chips, programmers, fueling boxes, etc.

  • Street Stock: For those who want to bought their truck for pulling heavy loads, and want to try sled pulling – so a near stock truck.
For a list of the complete rules, check the 2006 NHRDA Sled Pull Rulebook.

The day started somewhat threatening, with ominous clouds that usually bring rain (who would think it actually rains in the Pacific Northwest?). However, as the day progressed, the weather cooperated, and sled pulling was on its way. Unfortunately, only the weather had cooperated. When the pulling started, there was a failure of the sled. The weight box refused to move up, and the driver of the truck was pulling it down the track as fast as he could! Toward the end, as the sled operator put on the brakes, the weight box slammed up against the end of the sled, and broke the chain on the weight box! Talk about a harrowing experience!!!

Luckily, the sled pulling crew was able to repair the sled, and finish the season opener. That definitely made for an exciting day of sled pulling!
