More in: How-To, Ford, Sport Trucks, Suspension Getting Your Roll On Photos & Story By Michael Wilkes
If you are into the street truck scene, then you know that one of the more prominent items on the ultimate street truck builders parts list is a lowered suspension, because a true street truck cannot have the tired, old factory suspension installed and still be considered a street truck. If you are thinking about or maybe even in the process of building that pavement-pounding street truck project then you can be sure that the factory suspension is high on your list of items to be overhauled, upgraded or just plain sent to the trash heap. Planning to drop your truck is easy to add to your list, but how do you know what dropped suspension is right for you? Should you drop it a couple inches in the front and back with a set of springs and some shackles, or maybe you should go for broke, and we mean broke, and install an air-bag system allowing you to lay frame if you want to? The answer, just like the look of your truck, is completely up to you. The lowering kit or system you choose to install will determine, not only the look, but the practicality and usability of the truck, for instance a bagged truck sure can get low, and depending on the bag setup it can even tow better than a truck with conventional springs, however if you have a problem with one of the air bags then your truck will be out of commission until you can repair the problem. A conventional static drop, which usually consists of new, modified, suspension components will allow for a more practical drop overall, but it won't go as low as an air system, and it won't be able to haul as much. To demonstrate the most radical drop with a bolt on kit we took a brand new 2005 Ford-150 Crew Cab and added Groundforce's most radical drop kit, which shaves off 2 inches in the front, and 5 inches in the back. Groundforce's lowering kit includes everything, down to the brake cable relocation bracket screws, needed to take your everyday driver and transform it into a head-turning pavement pounding road sled, and we are going to show you how it's done.
