How To Install a Van Aaken's SmartBox F
By Mike Wilkes

It's no surprise that diesel motor equipped heavy duty trucks being manufactured today have been severely restricted by the factories for production. It saves fuel, lowers emissions and of course makes for a diesel motor that's never really capable of working to its full potential. One of the secrets to unlocking your diesel motors performance potential is van Aaken's SmartBox™. While van Aaken is relatively new to the US performance market, they have been busy making a name for themselves with the rest of the world by manufacturing and supplying high quality, diesel performance modules for virtually every passenger car & truck manufacturer with a diesel motor. With their sights set firmly on the US diesel performance market, van Aaken is delivering their Performance SmartBox to diesel truck owners' nationwide.

The SmartBox is a digital programmable device that alters your diesel motors factory fuel curve and timing allowing you to safely optimize performance, response and fuel efficiency while increase your trucks horsepower and torque with some very impressive numbers. For our how to article, we are installing a SmartBox F which has been painstakingly engineered to safely provide an additional 105 HP while delivering a jaw dropping 215 lb feet torque, on one of Truckblog's member's 2004 6.0L Powerstroke Super Duty Ford truck.

Even though our installation is only focused on the Ford 6.0L Powerstroke, Van Aaken Development manufacturers a wide array of power programmers for all the popular diesel trucks. Their product line includes all late model Chevy/GM's Duramax and Dodge's Cummins equipped trucks and even some other diesel applications such the late model Jeep Liberty, Mercedes Benz's E 320 CDI and Volkswagen's 2.0L and 1.96L equipped vehicles.

Not only does the SmartBox F safely add some serious performance numbers to your truck, but it does so quickly and easily in a painless installation that can easily be performed in less than an hour.

About the installation: Anyone who has taken upon themselves the task of installing some sort of upgrade to their vehicle, will be extremely happy with this installation. It can literally take five minutes to install with the simple removal of a plug and the addition of the SmartBox and wiring harness. We took the time to outline the steps to show just how simple it was to add an extra 105 horsepower and 215 lbs ft. torque to your truck.

1: The installation of the van Aaken SmartBox F has to be one of the quickest and easiest performance installations we have ever had done, but it's very important to start with the basics and do a complete inventory of the kit's contents:

• van Aaken SmartBox™ F
• Plug-in Wiring Loom
• 3 Position Toggle Switch
• Misc install parts and instructions
2: Using a 8mm wrench, we start this installation by disconnecting the battery of our truck because the van Aaken SmartBox connects to the vehicle from the ECU plug.
3: We remove the battery cover to gain access to the ECU which is located between the right side battery and the fender.
4: With the cables for the ECU visible, remove the center ECU cable by sliding back the gray release latch and removing the plug from the ECU. This allows you to attach the SmartBox wiring loom to the ECU cable by plugging the female end of the wiring loom into the disconnected ECU cable.
5: With the ECU cable securely fitted, attach the male plug of the SmartBox wiring loom to the female plug of the ECU.
6: After affixing the SmartBox to the vehicles' battery cover with the supplied velcro strips, connect the 12 pin male plug from the wiring loom to SmartBox's female plug.
7: If you want to control the SmartBox power settings, install the optional three position toggle switch by connecting the two pin plug from the SmartBox wiring loom to the plug on the toggle switch. If you do not install the toggle switch, the SmartBox will use the default power setting (Power 2).
8: Route the toggle switch through the firewall. For our install we passed the toggle switch through the grommet for the OEM primary wiring harness.
9: Remove the kick panel under the steering wheel and route the toggle switch and wire to the location where they are to be affixed. Taking care to avoid moving parts.
10: Check to ensure there is sufficient space behind the mount point you have selected for the
