More in: Ford, Mercury, Recall, SUV The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a warning for owners of 2002 to 2005 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUV's due to 200 complaints where the vehicles were said to have gone out of park and into reverse on its own. During those model years, nearly 1.5 million SUV's were produced which could possibly result in a massive recall for Ford. No issue has been recalled yet but the NHTSA are taking a "preliminary evaluation... to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences of the alleged defect and any relationship of the alleged gearshift lever mechanism failures to the alleged vehicle rollaway incidents". A Ford spokes person also commented, "We do not see a safety risk and we will be fully cooperating with the government with the investigation".
