The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have delayed passing an increase for higher crash test standards citing a "new ratings system will make it more difficult to achieve top scores and the new standards were scheduled to take effect for the 2010 model year". The adjustment in crash test standards come as a relief for automakers, specifically for companies based in the United States, as tighter standards would cause "more financial headaches". The NHTSA disagrees though, saying "it will make the situation tougher for consumers in the long run".
