We hinted about a possible Ford and General Motors merger back in June, and now according to sources within the two companies, a possible "collaboration to develop new engines and other powertrain technologies" may occur. The two companies whom have experienced a combined 48 percent loss this year alone, are struggling to reduce costs of research and development and respond to consumer demand. If the deal goes through, General Motors would grant access to Ford for their electrical technology used in the Chevrolet Volt. A spokesman for Ford stated "Our focus and greatest opportunity is to create 'One Ford,' and we're doing that leveraging our own global assets," he said. "(But) we're always open to talking to others in the industry. Beyond that, we're not going to comment". No further details were reported from either company.
