More in: Chevrolet, Engine, General Motors, GMC, Layoffs General Motors Corporation made the announcement of the closure of their Windsor transmission factory in 2010. The factory currently produces four speed transmissions which is fast becoming "old technology", as automotive manufacturers shift towards more fuel efficient six speed versions. GM Canada President, Arturo Elisas, stated in an interview "This extremely difficult decision is in no way any reflection on our excellent Windsor workforce or their outstanding track record in producing great transmissions" and "We have worked extensively with our labor and government partners but have been led to the unavoidable conclusion that there are no available replacement products in the relevant time-frame for this location". The plant closure will also eliminate 1,400 jobs and is due to close in the second quarter of 2010.
