In an analysis by Kelley Blue Book, the number of new vehicles that need premium gasoline has risen from 166 vehicles in the 2002 model year to 282 vehicles this year, almost double the amount at a time when fuel efficiency is of great importance.
Jack Nerad, Kelley Blue Book's Editorial Director, stated "Today, in virtually all engines out there, you could drop down an octane rating and probably not notice...Engine computers adjust to eliminate ping that can come from burning less-potent fuel, but the motor also will put out less power". Currently, the national gasoline price average for a gallon of premium was $3.70, which is $.33 cents higher than regular. Chief Editor for Consumer Reports, David Champion, stated "People really, really, really dislike putting premium into their car...You see the cheaper fuel right in front of you, and you can't use it".
