More in: Chevrolet, Diesel, Engine, Fuel, General Motors, GMC, Hybrid, Performance In an article by the Detroit News, General Motors vice chairman, Bob Lutz, announced yesterday that the automaker would be producing 80 percent of their vehicles in a hybrid platform by 2020, due to tougher fuel economy standards set by the U.S. Congress back in December 2007. The heaviest hit, are General Motors full-size lineup of pickup trucks and SUV's. Those specific vehicles can notice a 25 percent increase in fuel economy with their hybrid forms. The latest laws require that automakers must have an average of 35 miles per gallon for cars and trucks, by 2020. "Ultimately by 2020, we figure that 80 percent of vehicles are going to require some sort of level of hybridization...We cannot get to 35 miles per gallon with anything resembling the current product portfolio with conventional technology". Lutz also stated that GM will be forced to add hybrid options "to a lot of sport utilities and pick-up trucks". No announcement has been made yet for their heavy duty platform trucks and the associated V8 engines.Discuss now in our forums: Yeah. Uh, Did You Get That Memo?
