Ouch! It seems that Ford's dreaded past with Explorers flipping over has come back to haunt them, according to a NHTSA report published this past Monday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4x2 the highest percent chance to rollover in a single vehicle crash: 34.8%. That same vehicle, according to NHTSA, tipped 35% of the time in tests that did not involve another vehicle. Other trucks which were determined to be a bit tipsy by NHTSA were the Toyota Tacoma extended cab (4x2 @ 19.8% and 4x4 @ 28.3%), the GMC Yukon 4x2 came in at 28.3% as well, and the Chevy Tahoe 4x2 also scored a 28.3% chance of tipping during their tests. Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley said, "While we believe the NHTSA rating system has some value, we don't believe it is the most effective indicator of how a vehicle performs in the real world due to test variability. Accident-avoidance situations are such unpredictable events that it is very difficult to try to mirror that to real-world performance." What's your take on this? Post a comment!
