How-To Install Line-X Spray In Bed Liner

After buying a brand new pickup truck one of the first things you want to do is protect the bed and keep the truck looking good. At this point you are faced with a few options.

  • Do nothing
  • Drop in bed liner
  • Spray in bed liner

After careful consideration there is really only one option that is best for the protection, durability, and appearance of your new investment. Doing nothing is the least favored course of action because the only thing protecting your bed is the factory paint, which will wear very quickly and if left untreated can turn into a complete eyesore. Who wants to roll up in a good looking rig and drop the tailgate only to have the entire bed look like its 10 years older than the truck? The disadvantage to a drop in bed liner is the wear and corrosion you do not see, as they typically trap water and debris between the liner and the bed. As a result, a drop-in liner can actually promote condensation, water damage, abrasion, rust and corrosion.

By comparison, a spray-on bed liner is installed by preparing the surface and coating it with a protective material. Once the bed liner is installed, you should expect it to provide maximum resistance to dents, scratches/scrapes, damage caused by trapped water, and other potential problems.

One of the many reasons a spray-on bed liner looks appealing is due to the custom look of the sprayed finish. One leading spray-on company (LINE-X) has developed a product that will protect the liner from UV exposure, giving the truck bed a lasting visual appeal while maintaining its protective qualities for the lifetime of the truck.  Their bed liners mold perfectly to the truck's bed to ensure a perfect fit with ultra-consistent material thickness and hardness. LINE-X also comes with a nationwide warrantee so you can rest assure that any problems you may have will be addressed wherever you are without having to negotiate with the original installer for repairs.

For Project "JAKD" we chose LINE-X as the spray-in liner of choice. For our application, LINE-X offered the best combination of protection, durability, and appearance. Our objective was not having a bed liner that was too soft promoting premature wear, and having a liner that would withstand the Texas heat and still look good for the life of the truck. LINE-X is a two-part polyurethane elastomer system. It uses equal parts of an "A" component or hardener and a "B" component or resin. When combined properly it produces a polyurethane elastomer similar to the bottoms of your work boot.

We were pleased to see LINE-X of Friendswood, TX take extra precautions when they take receipt of a vehicle for spraying. This was a good indication that they took pride in their work and it will be evident in the finished product later in this article.

The Installation

Note: This installation is a behind-the-scenes look at a Line-X spray-in bed liner installation as the process requires special tools and must to be performed by a professional Line-X dealer.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

As with any spray in bed liner the key to a quality finished product lies in the preparation of the truck bed. Proper equipment in addition to well-trained technicians will ensure this result.

  • Nylon Cut Brush on a Chicago Rotary Sander
  • 60 grit sandpaper
  • Masking Paper/Tape
  • Wire Tape
  • Methanol
  • Respirator
1: Preparation is the one of the most important steps to having a durable LINE-X bed liner. The first step is remoal of the vehicle tailgate. An often-overlooked step is removal of the access cover on the tailgate. Removing the access cover and hardware will ensure that it will not get bonded together, enabling you to service the latch and locking mechanism if it is ever required in the future.
2: The key to a factory appearance is removal of all the brackets and bolts that hold the bed and tailgate access cover in place prior to applying the LINE-X. It will also facilitate removal of these same parts if it is ever required.
3: The next step is masking off the bed and tailgate. The crew was extremely careful to make sure there were no openings in the masking or plastic where the material can get through. This same attention to detail in the preparation process also eliminated all possibilities of overspray.

Paper was used to protect the tailgate latch mechanism. This ensured that the material did not bond to the mechanism, which would prevent proper function.

The preparation of the bed continues as the bed rails are masked off with wire tape. This ensures the cleanest possible break between the liner and truck bed once the process is complete. A large tarp was also used on top of the masking paper on both sides to ensure there would be no over spray anywhere on the truck while it was in the booth.

4: Scuffing the truck bed and tailgate is the next step in the prepping process. A nylon cut brush mounted to a Chicago Rotary Sander ensures that the scuffing process is uniform throughout the entire bed and also speeds up the process.

A close look at the beds finish after the application of the nylon cut brush shows how even and thorough the process is. 60 grit sandpaper was also used to get in the hard to reach areas and employed as a follow up to the nylon cut brush. This ensured that the material would adhere evenly and properly to every inch of the bed. This is an extra step the crew in Friendswood, TX applies to all vehicles they service.

5: Once the bed and tailgate have been scuffed, the next step is to get all the residue out to ensure proper bonding of the bed liner material. This process starts with using compressed air to get all the small particles out that might be hiding in the recessed areas of the bed. The final step is wiping down the bed using methanol to ensure the strongest possible bond between the bed and the liner.
6: With the bed and tailgate completely prepped, the vehicle was moved to the spray booth where a large tarp divides the cab from the bed and further ensures that the vehicles finish will not be ruined by overspray.
7: The entire spray process only takes about 10 minutes. Two liquid components, a hardener and resin, are brought together using a special spray nozzle. The LINE-X product cures or "sets up" in 3 to 5 seconds, giving it an immediate set time.

Your LINE-X dealer can also make custom adjustments to your bed liner depending on how you intend to use it or how you want the LINE-X to appear when cured.

  • Light: Smooth texture used for stenciling custom designs or for spraying a custom part or accessory.
  • Medium: Standard texture for truck beds
  • Heavy: Available upon request if you desire the most gripping power but the appearance will be more coarse
We chose the standard thickness of 1/8" (Medium) for general all-purpose use of the truck bed.

8: Since the LINE-X dries so fast, reassembly can be performed immediately. By removing the hardware, you can see how LINE-X maintains a factory appearance by having all the bolts and brackets accessible.
9: Once all hardware has been reinstalled it's just a matter of reattaching the tailgate, which completes the entire process.

Here you can see the outstanding texture and the clean break on the tailgate offered by application of wire tape.

The truck is ready for use immediately - even in the rain or cold, without affecting the bed liner. However, it is recommended that you allow 24 hours "set time" before placing heavy objects in the bed.

From start to finish, it took less than 2 hours to complete the procedure. The crew from Friendswood, TX did an outstanding job from receipt of the truck to completion of the project.
