Choosing a bed cover can be arduous process with the amount of variations available on the market. For Project "JAKD" the bed cover had to complement the overall look of the truck, but it also had to be durable and built with quality materials, functional and weather proof all at the same time. The cover had to be user friendly; meaning when the bed was used nothing fancy needed to be done to make room for large loads. This limited our search to roll top covers. One of the companies that stood out in our search was Applied Products, Inc which produces the RETRAX Retractable Pickup Bed Cover.

The RETRAX retractable pickup truck bed tonneau cover is unique because it is manufactured from polycarbonate, a durable thermoplastic commonly known as LEXAN®. Sealed ball-bearing rollers mounted onto aluminum support beams allows the retractable tonneau cover to retract or close easily without the use of pull straps, Velcro, snaps or springs; the truck bed cover is also key lockable in any position along the rail. This patented low profile design incorporates a front cover that is flush with the rolling tonneau cover, which streamlines the overall appearance and provides a firm, dependable seal to help keep the truck bed dry.

Benefits:

One Piece Polycarbonate (LEXAN ®) Design - A durable thermoplastic commonly known as LEXAN® . This rigid, one piece sheet is engineered to retract without joints or hinges that can trap dust, wear out, or freeze. Polycarbonate has excellent impact resistance and is unharmed by sun, moisture or temperatures ranging from -50 to +200 degrees F. The RETRAX Retractable Roll Top Cover is maintenance-free and its low-profile design has a gloss-black finish that is UV treated for years of protection from the sun. This is the same polymer technology used in fighter-jet windshields and bullet proof glass. The end result is a truck bed cover that can withstand the vigor's of nature and survive the most rugged use.

Strength - The cover is reinforced with up to 20 tempered aluminum support beams embedded every 4 3/4", which will hold 200 lbs. and can easily support heavy snow loads.

Sealed Ball-bearing Rollers - Sealed ball-bearing rollers mounted onto each end of the aluminum support beams allow the cover to retract or close easily without the use of springs or any kind of mechanism. Anti-bind ball-bearings mounted horizontally prevent the cover from binding as it is opened or closed.

Spiral Track Storage System - Unique spiral track system that prevents the cover from touching itself as it retracts, which eliminates wear-and-tear on the cover. No moving parts to jam, freeze or fail.

Lockable In Any Position Along The Rail - The Roll Top Cover can be latched or key locked in any position along the rail to allow unlimited hauling flexibility and convenient use with a fifth-wheel trailer. The tailgate works independently of the rolling cover also enabling the user to use the bed like a big trunk. When access is needed, simply release the flush-mounted latch with the touch of a button and the cover glides out of the way with the use of one hand.

Lock Handle - The flush-mounted lock handle, located at the rear on the driver's side, provides easy access when opening and closing the cover. The lock is also protected with its own weather proof cover which will prevent lock failures due to prolonged exposure to the elements.

Tailgate Area - The RETRAX™ bed cover overlaps the top of the tailgate utilizing an automotive grade weather strip seal keeping water from rain or snow at bay.

Weather Protection - The patented RETRAX ™ low-profile design uses a front cover that is flush with the rolling cover; this streamlines the overall appearance and provides a firm, dependable seal to help keep the bed dry. This design incorporates automotive grade weather-strip for harsh outdoor use. It seals the roll top cover on all sides to help keep water, snow, ice and dust out of the bed and out of the moving parts of the cover. The automotive grade weather-strip incorporates a soft felt lining that allows a smooth sliding action even in ice and snow conditions. It has been engineered to withstand Mother Nature's worst and offers dependable operation year-around.

Maintenance - There is no special maintenance required. The cover can be washed and waxed using the same method for the rest of the vehicle.

Customer Service - The team at RETRAX prides themselves in providing top quality customer service and highly trained technicians. However, it doesn't stop there. RETRAX offers customers the option of customizing their roll top cover to suit their needs. Bedrails can be cut and re-powder coated to expose stake-hole pockets for tying down large loads, installing a CB antenna, or mounting any accessory that requires its use. The RETRAX Retractable Pickup Bed Cover can also be customized to work with a toolbox in the bed.

With the solid reputation RETRAX brings to the table and the plethora of benefits associated above, the RETRAX Generation III Retractable Pickup Bed Cover was the clear choice.

The Installation

The RETRAX Retractable Pickup Bed Cover arrived packaged in two boxes. One of the first things we noticed was how well the instructions were written. From the quality color photos of each step to accompanying information, it was readily apparent that RETRAX focused on making this document a quality product. Attention to detail in small areas is usually a good indicator of the overall quality of the product it supports, and RETRAX did not disappoint. An experienced installer can install the system in about 30 minutes after unpacking the product. Allow about an hour if this is the first time installing a bed cover.

Parts List for Large Box:

  • Owner's packet with keys, hex wrench, and warranty card
  • Cover rolled into canister-spiral assembly
  • Front cover for canister
  • 2 Drain tubes
  • Optional accessories (Gate Gasket, Tailgate Lock)

Parts List for Rail Box:

  • Driver's side rail
  • Passenger side rail
  • Clamp box including:
    • 4 x Clamps
    • 4 x 10/32" by 7/16" screws
    • 2 x Screws with black end caps
    • 1 x 1/8" measuring tool

Tools Required:

  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • 9/16" wrench (ratchet works best)
  • Drill with ½" bit

Pre-Assembly Guidelines:

  • Assembly can be done by one person, but it is recommended to use two people for lifting the assembly and positioning it in the truck bed, and for spotting the area between the cab and front of the truck bed while drilling holes for the drain tubes.
  • Ensure there is enough floor space for assembly of the bed cover and rails.
  • Clean out the pickup bed and the front and sides of the bed rails. This is required to ensure the best seal between the bed rail and weather strip.
  • If a plastic bed liner is present, it may need to be cut or notched at the front if it interferes with proper canister location

Step 1: Place the spiral canister assembly on the foam shipping end caps:

There are two brass nipples for the drain tubes under the canister. Placing the canister on the foam end caps will prevent the nipples from being pushed in. Pull the brass nipples out (if required) using a pair of needle nose pliers. The exposed nipple should protrude about 5/8" out of the canister.

The passenger bed rail will be installed in step #3. Before the installation can take place, the shipping bracket and tubes must be removed from the canister in step #2. The passenger rail is identified by a decal located at the front (cab) end of the rail. The driver's side rail is identified by a white nylon lock stop at the tailgate end.

Diver's side rail (tailgate end)

Step 2: Remove the shipping bracket and tubes:

Before installing the passenger side rail, the aluminum shipping bracket must be removed. Remove the single screw using a manual #2 Phillips screwdriver. Pull the cover up and lift the bracket from the bottom and roll it to the outside to clear the bearings. Next pull the long plastic shipping tubes out of the spirals on both ends. Do not remove the red tie-wire from the canister on the driver's side at this time.

Step 3: Install the passenger side rail on to the spiral canister:

The fronts of the rails have two threaded holes used for attachment to the spiral canister. Start by sliding the cover and bearings into the channel of the rail. Continue to thread the rail onto the cover, holding the rail level to help line everything up.

Tip: It may help to rotate the canister slightly toward the rear in order to level out the rail as it would attach to the canister. Ensure the bearings are lined up in the channel of the passenger side rail and the two threaded tabs are lined up with the holes in the spiral canister on the inside.

When the two threaded holes in the rail are lined up behind the two holes in the spiral canister, attach using two of the 10/32"x7/16" screws. Push the screws through the holes in the canister and start threading both screws into the rail. Finish up by tightening the screws using a manual #2 Phillips screwdriver.

Step 4: Install the driver's side rail on to the spiral canister:

Remove the red tie holding the roll top cover to the driver's side of the spiral canister.

Open the locking mechanism by pressing the release button and pull the cover out 6"-8".

Caution: DO NOT allow the cover to roll back in until the rail is installed. The bottom of the lock could damage the polycarbonate.

Step 5: Install the front cover to the spiral canister:

The front cover is attached below the rails in front of the spiral canister assembly. The thin edge (without the weather strip) is slid into place first toward the tailgate. Hold the front cover up against the weather strip on both rails and slid it back until the holes in the cover line up over the threaded holes in the rail.

Hold the cover level and push both ends in evenly to help slide it into place. When the holes are lined up, start threading the 2 screws with black caps.

Tighten the 2 screws securely using a manual #2 Phillips screwdriver, and then snap the black screw caps into place.
