Man, when did chevy start putting the slave in the bell housing with the throwout bearing??

I got a clutch that I'm having problems getting to fully disengage without several pumps on the pedal. Fluid level looks ok so I'm assuming either clutch master or slave is going bad. The problem is I can't replace the master (assuming the master is bad) and then bleed the system if the slave is in the bell housing.

It looks like I have to pull the tranny and the bell housing to do anything and I just as well replace clutch, throwout bearing and slave while I'm there.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Tom

Yeah, you may as well as long as you're in there. That's odd, I thought that was a Ford thing, that idiotic integrated slave cylinder/throwout bearing.

It seems I dodged a bullet but it's a little hard to tell until I can determine what caused the engine to shut completely down and refuse to start for 10 minutes on the test drive.

The master cylinder replacement seemed to do the trick. I bled the slave down getting the blackest crap I've ever seen in a hydraulic system. Once bled the peddle returned to normal and I have good clutch action.

I test drove about 5 miles and the engine shut down like I turned off the ignition switch. It refused to start for about 10 minutes and then started with no miss or any hint of anything wrong. Of course, I headed straight back to the garage and it shut down again while I was going about 30mph. I cycled the ignition switch without coming to a stop and it caught and remained running until I got back. It appears to have a fault code (check engine before continuing or something like that) in memory and the manual says I need to download the fault code.

Could be that I got a bad ignition switch but I doubt that would give me a fault code.

It's possible the old truck just didn't want me getting away so easy on the clutch deal so is giving me something else to play with.

???

Got lucky and fixed the clutch with just a master cylinder change and flush on the slave. The blackest crap I've ever seen came out of the slave when I bleed it. Works great now with full pedal and no bleed off.

It didn't want me to get off to light do the crankshaft position sensor went out on the clutch test drive. It stopped dead, restarted about 10 minutes later and got me back to the shop before dieing completely.

Life is good!
