Seriously. When did they start making these for EVERY SINGLE LENS IN EXISTANCE? Even the shitty kit lenses that you get with the Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XTi?

And why is every single person have one, and use it all the time?

I thought it was a problem here only in the USA (larger concentration of idiots per capita).

But no. It's in Asia too. They use it all times of the day too...cloudy-low contrast weather, at night, with a flash...seriously. Kind of like driving with your fog lights on during the day, or on a clear night.

It's ridiculous....is it just me who notices? Or do you guys do as well?

RANT OFF.

My Wife says it's always just me. I was just passing on the sentiment.

I'm with ya on this one. I don't own one and have even used Photoshop to add a lens flare or two.

I don't get it either...

YESH! That is exactly how I envision Denny at this very moment. ANGRY AZN!

I have one and have only used it a handful of times, stupid thing always seemed to fall off. Apparently it was not till recently that I learned to screw something on correctly. Whatev. Overall... lens hoods are ghey.

Nope, pretty sure I've had that down for quite some time.

My problem is that I always forget which lens hood goes with each lens. They are usually not necessary on cameras with APS-C sensors, any edge effects the lens hood would correct are already accounted for by the smaller sensor.

I rarely ever need or use a lens hood, unless I'm going to be doing a lot of shooting at the very widest focal length on a given lens.

Even more lens hoods in hawaii. The way I see it - it's like polishing turd.

Or in car terms, the chrome hub cap spinners you throw on a Chevy Aveo.

On an expensive lens, using the rigid hood can be a good way to save the front of the lens if/when you drop the whole thing. $50 hood saves $2000 lens. And, you can run without a haze/sunlight filter, which is usually there to protect the front of the lens, but can, under some circumstances, reduce the optical precision of the lens.

That's the only reason I run the one on my 70-200mm f/2.8L lens.

That piece was all I could find from the lens hood. The filter saved the lens for sure!

Looks like you were lucky to be able to unscrew that filter! It certainly did it's job, and the hood probably helped keep it from being even worse.
