i have an 88 silverado stepside 2wd 350 tbi 5speed manual that the odometer doe not work. it has apparently had 196,782 miles for the last 9 years!!. Time is definately standing still for this truck, lol. Also it smokes on startup and i havee to top off the oil every 2-3 weeks, rings or valves?

Check out the latest parts and accessories from Truck Hownd

In '88 they still had cable attachments didn't they? Maybe unscrew the cable and see if the gears are still in tact. Or if you bought it from someone else it may have been tampered with to hide the real mileage and was broken in this process. Check the cable bottom line.

Bingo - check the speedo cable.

Regarding blowing smoke at startup - do a compression leakdown test after squirting oil into the chamber. If it leaks compression it's more than likely the valves. Also check to see if there's any oil in the coolant. That would indicate a blown head gasket or cracked head. The color of the smoke is also an indicator; black is too much fuel, blue is oil being burnt and white (with a sweet smell) indicates that coolant is being vaporized in the combustion chamber.

But for a truck that has been at 200k miles for the past 9-years - how much more can you expect from a truck? It's old and tired. No doubt it could benefit from a rebuild or an engine swap.

Let us know how it goes for ya!

Ill check the cable. i agree thats its old and tired but it runs great and still has good power so ill just fiddle with it here and there and continue to enjoy it.

Thanks

If the speedo works and the odometer doesn't.....it not the cable but the instrument cluster.
