| Does the auto hunt around a lot for a gear? What gears are in the two trucks? 3.73's? 4.10's? The older truck could even have 3.55's

| | I knew that question would most likely be asked and to be honest I have no idea. The 4 speed is a borg warner and that's about all I know. I'll have to research and find out though. | |

| I'm talking about the rear diff. See if they have a tag on one of the cover bolts, the 7.3 may even tell on the door jamb sticker

| The 02 PSD would be the hands down winner in that contest.
The only gear ratio in the 7.3 F-250's is 3.73. 4.10's are available as an option only on the F-350 Duallys.
Doesn't matter what you are towing, unless it exceeds 12k lbs. Then you'll exceed the tow rating on both vehicles. (well, technically 12.5k on a bumper pull on the Superduty.)

| Is the 02 better because of the 7.3 or becasue of the auto tranny itself. I always thought manuals were better for towing (probably because that's what I grew up with). My curiosity is peeked now so I'll have to see exactly what the gear ratio is in both when I get back into town. What is PSD?
I run a small tractor business and have towed my small/medium tractor with implements many times using the 02 and only had my tranny temp rise once. I recently purchased the 85 because it has a flatbed which I need to carry additional equipment at times. The 02 only has a 6ft bed and therefore I can't swap the flatbed over. Also couldn't pass up the 85 at hte price I got it for.

| PSD is powerstroke diesel. The 7.3 will be better because it has much more power.
Unfortunately manual trannys are being phased out. GM no longer uses them, and its rumored Ford may abandon them in the next couple years. The autos now are beefy, the newer ones have 5 or 6 gears depending on the brand, and have tow haul modes that downshift automatically and may have integrated brake controllers. This combination makes for very nice towing
But, I'm getting ahead of your situation because all that didnt come out till 2003.
Maybe if you were asking about two 2002 7.3's, one with an auto, one with a manual, the manual would win because you would be talking about a 6speed manual. But doesnt the 6.9 have a 4speed?
In this situation its the 7.3 hands down, regardless of the tranny.

| | Yeah, even though the 4R100 isn't the strongest automatic in the world, it still doesn't outweigh the power disadvantages of the older truck. I'd probably get a huge transmission cooler for it (sounds like you tow a lot), a good quality temp gauge, and stick with that. | |

| ^^ Both great ideas. I know the 02 has a factory temp gauge, but its just a glorified idiot light. I would suggest a full set of gauges, EGT, Tranny, and maybe boost. They make kits for it.
Diesel manor has great kits with all the extra parts most others dont include. And full color instructions
heres a nice 2 gauge kit http://www.dieselmanor.com/gauges/DM-2gk-isf.asp |

| | OK, now I really feel stupid. I was thinking of tranny terms when asking about PSD. Never thought about the big picture and absolutely love my "PSD." Guess the 85 will be used as a farm truck (new paint job and all :) and I'll continue using the 02 as my work horse. It does come with the factory tranny temp guage and not an idiot light. I also have the Edge Attitude chip installed and constantly watch the EGT, Boost, etc. It has the factory tow package as well with the cooler so I'm comfortable with that but will check out dieselmanor. Wish I could swap the flatbed now though and then all my problems would be solved. I really appreciate all the helpful info here. | |

| What I was trying to say is the factory trans gauge is like a glorified idiot light. I have full isspro gauges, and can read to the nearest 5degrees or less, and the aftermarket gauge may change 50 degrees, and the factory gauge always goes to the middle, and stays there no matter what.
So since you have an edge with a monitor, you dont need other gauges. Does the Edge have its own temp sender for the tranny, or does it just use the factory one?
Mort was saying that some people upgrade the factory cooler to a larger one like newer trucks have.
Maybe check craigslist for a flatbed?

| | I don't recall the Edge having a tranny reading but will have to double check. I'll also look into the aftermarket cooler as well. Truck's paid for and I don't intend to get rid of it any time soon so I'll definitely look into upgrading. Only upgrades to this point is the Edge, AFE 2-stage air flow and 5" exhaust. I check Graig's List religiously. As a matter of fact that's where I found the 85. Thanks again for the info. | |

| | Yeah, you're a prime customer for a huge aftermarket transmission cooler. What kills those trannys is excess heat, and although they may not seem cheap in the short run, they're a helluva lot cheaper than a new transmission, especially since you put it through the paces. | |
