So, whilst we were moving my grandmother this weekend, we lost her Ethernet cord. That got me to thinking...

I have my Comcast box thingy plugged into my computer through a USB cable. There is also an Ethernet connection. Is there any difference in connection speed? Efficiency? Why are there both things?

Not that its all that important, I was just curious. kthanksbye

If your computer only supports USB 1.1, then the Ethernet is probably faster.

If it supports USB 2.0, it's probably a wash.

However, if you use USB, then your only real protection is a software firewall running on your PC. Given the various Windows security risks, and the historical exploits, I would only trust an actual hardware router/firewall.

So, IMO, the best connection is Ethernet from the modem to a router/firewall and then Ethernet or secured wifi from there to the PC.

What does a hardware firewall look like? Or do you mean something like a linksys router with its own firewall system?

That is what Dev was talking about, a router with the firewall built into the router's firmware. Just one more layer of protection between the computer and the internet.

We have Cox cable here at the restaurant and I am running our network (XP) thru the ethernet outlet and running my laptop (Vista) thru the usb outlet of the cable modem at the same time. There may be a speed issue, but I don't really notice it.
