The cradle is now occupied!

My Granddaughter Cora was born last Sunday, March 1st. The Wife and I made the trip down to NC within a couple of hours of getting the call. Just got back home last night.

Funny you should mention that. I did buy some dye and experimented with it a little. But, since the crib I am working on is not finished yet, my Daughter borrowed a crib and changing table from a friend. The crib and changing table are unstained maple. Once she got everything set up in the nursery, she decided that she liked the lighter color better, so the crib will not be dyed after all. It will be wiped with BLO and top coated with Formby's Tung Oil finish, just like the cradle.

I like easy!

lol dont we all!

I'm really curious to see how you make out with the oil color. It's not exactly a common practice.

Actually, boiled linseed oil is a pretty common finish. It looks almost exactly like pure tung oil, but it is a lot cheaper, easier to find and drys a lot faster. It really makes the grain 'pop', and it is clear, no color added.

A lot of people topcoat the oil with shellac, but I like using the Formby's finish. After the first couple of coats, you can add additional coats without having to scuff up the surface between each. Formby's is an oil/varnish blend with polyurethane, so it is a very hard, protective finish.

Actually Mark, I was referring to the artists oil color method I described to you before. I am waiting to see how you make out trying to stain something with it.

I beg to differ. I make things for sale, but its not my day job. That way I dont have to worry about making a living from it, and therefor can enjoy it.
