I have a Clarion Max 685 in my truck that plays everything under the sun. I can play burned CD's, DVD's, from an ipod, and from a USB stick, or thumb drive if you like, on a USB cable. My problem (and question) is that some of the music I have on either Rhapsody or Windows Media Player won't play if i put it on a memory stick. some of it will, but it seems the WMV files I downloaded won't. WTF? this is about ot piss me off. This may not be clear, if you have ideas but not enough info, please ask for clarification. I have downloaded a media converter, but it says some of the WMV files are DRM protected. Is there a way to get around this? I bought all of these tracks, or burned them off my CD's, and want to be able to listen to them going down the fucking road, not jsut sitting in front of my damn computer.

| | I wouldn't know anything about this first-hand, but I'd think you could use the WMV's on your computer to make a CD-Audio disc, then rip them back to MP3's. Then put the MP3's on your thumb drive, and you should be good. I would think. | |

| DRM - Digital Rights Managent. Basically a license encoded in downloaded music that only allows you to play it on players supported by the place you bought it from. I thought it was only an iTunes issue but it appears your old friend Rhapsody includes it and so does Napster.
iTunes will only play on your(not anyone else's) iPod and the computer which was used to download/buy. You cannot give a friend these songs bought from iTunes because the DRM license blocks them from playing. Your friend has to go buy his own copy of the song. You also can not burn copies of these songs to CD or disc because they need the software written by iTunes - or Rhapsody - to be able to play. Hence your iPod is the only way to play them.
There is software around that will remove this DRM but I do not know how "easy" it is to convert. Used to be about 6 months ago you actually had to rewrite the code in the song to remove the DRM. There may be some "one-click" software options available now but be careful.
I no longer buy any music from iTunes because of this. However a lot of the major music companies have put pressure in iTunes to remove all DRM and it appears they are now offering some DRM free downloads.
I only use Amazon.com, e-music.com and Walmart for my downloads. All DRM free.

| | The Pirate Bay is DRM free. I only buy music from bands that don't associate with the RIAA. | |

| iTunes now has DRM-free options for the entire catalog.
You could always burn the songs in standard audio format to a CD and then re-rip them into another PC. You could also allow up to 5 PCs to play them and load them on multiple iPods.
While the Apple DRM was annoying I never really found it to be a limitation.

| I have to agree with Dev. I've never had any issues with Apple.
In case you didn't know - you can use 'idump' to sync someone else's ipod to your desktop/laptop. idump is available as a free download ( )

| You're right TA. I ran into that a few days ago. But I'm not all that bothered by it. I "idumped" 11k songs and have found a few already that are 'locked'. No problem - I just delete them - leaving 10,975 remaining. It's all a relative issue, right? | |

| I agree with the ratio of songs that will be unplayable with most copied songs from other players. I guess it really does sound from my post that I am against iTunes as a whole. I love iTunes as an organizer and when I think about it, I really don't share music unless asked and a very small amount of it came from iTunes.
I just have been using Amazon a lot lately and have become very fond of it. Lot's of good free independent music also. TA
