1971 Lincoln Continental
Olive green, white vinyl top, white leather interior. Power seats/windows/mirrors. This thing is in perfect condition, just the headline has a small tear. Even got the stock radio/a-track that works perfect lol. I'll get pics later it's similar to the one below.

All the window motors are good just a couple of the windows are off track. Also it's got a carbed 460. I haven't played with a carb other that my motor cycles and my VW Bug. It's pretty hard to start when it's cold out so I'm thinking a good carb cleaning should help? Plugs and wires are new.

Um - that'd be an "8-track"!

Youngsters....

Hard starting carb'ed engines are usually due to a choke that's not operating correctly. They often need to be freed up (they stick open or closed). Also, if the choke is electrically operated, make sure there's a good connection where the wire slips onto the spade connector.

A carburetor (North American spelling) or carburettor (Commonwealth spelling), is a device that blends air and fuel for an internal combustion engine. The word carburetor comes from the French carbure meaning 'carbide'. To carburete means to combine with carbon. In fuel chemistry, the term has the more specific meaning of increasing the carbon (and therefore energy) content of a fuel by mixing it with a volatile hydrocarbon.

Well? You asked!

You so need to add curb feelers, pink shag carpet dash and fuzzy dice on the rear view.

You're going to end up hating three things for certain; washing it, drying it, and detailing it! That thing has acres of paint!

If it has a set of points, go straight to your favorite online auto parts place and buy a Pertronix Ignitor (solid state replacement for points). That will make starting the car about 1000 times easier under many conditions.

If it hasn't had plugs recently, go get a set of plain old autolite, motorcraft, or NGK plugs. Copper cheapies. No platinum! The cheap ones work great in these old engines. It'll cost you 10 bucks and most of the skin off your knuckles, but it will be well worth it.

New plug wires - now. Unless the previous owner gave you a receipt for some in the last few thousand miles.

Those things will get you 90% there.

Put a bottle of Sea Foam through it before you rebuild or replace the carb.

If you really MUST get a rebuilt carb, and you want it to run like new, see if Pony Carburetors (I think they're near Syracuse NY) has a rebuild/replacement program for that model/car. Nobody knows Ford carbs like those guys. It'll cost you a couple hundred bucks and you won't have to do a thing but bolt it on. If you buy a parts place replacement, you'll be bugging us about setting the floats and all sorts of other crap. Frankly, I don't want to hear it - it took me 2 YEARS to get my last early Ford carb to run like new. My friend's Shelby ran like Day 1 after a half hour when we got his Pony Carb rebuilds.

Meanwhile, you do know that a 460 gets about 8 miles per gallon - up hill, down hill, with or without a tailwind, in neutral, towing a trailer. Whatever, it'll always do about 8. It's pretty hard to make a 460 'work hard'.

Thanks Eric.

My office is about a mile from my house so no worries on gas, plus I've got a few gas savers when I need to go some where. I'm going to do the plugs/wires this weekend. Never heard of a Pertronix Ignitor, I'll check it out.

Yesterday I ripped all the door panels off and got all the windows back on track and greased. Even the little wing windows roll down, perfect for a smoker like me!

Got two 15's going in the trunk as soon as I find an amp, hooked up a dvd player in the glove box and 7" screen below the dash.

Nice! It looks like you're going to PIMP your own ride! (instead of having Xibit and his new fcked up crew do it for you).

What, the factory 2 speaker sound isn't good enough for you? It might even have some deluxe setup with *4* speakers! Two in the dash, and two in the rear package tray.

I did a quick Google - looks like all Lincoln V8s from 57-73 had a standard single point distributor with no electronic ignition. Pertronix says a Ignitor p/n 1281 will fit.

Since last time I checked, they came out with an 'Ignitor II', which adds variable dwell for more mid-range power. Not sure you need that with a 460, but it might improve mileage, which would never hurt, even if you only do have a short commute.

You gotta get it out on the road and let it warm up all the way. A too short commute would be hard on it after a while... road trip!

It had some 6x8's in the rear, I already ripped those out for some 6x9's....haven't gotten to the fronts yet. I'm keeping the "8"-track in there and got the cd/dvd player hidden in the glove box.

I doubt I'll even really drive this thing. I just want to clean it up and show it here and there, cruise on the weekends when I'm actually home. I've got a 81 Chevy C10 I was tinkering with in my backyard but lost total interest in it and hopefully will have it to the scrap yard this weekend so I can park my new baby in it's place to play with.
