HI guys and gals.

I'm brand new to this site. I have a 1988 GMC C1500 half-ton. It's got a 4.3L V6 with a four speed manual transmission. One thing that I"m wondering is can you do a headlight conversion from a single to either a dual or composite headlights. I have just the big square plain single headlights and i want to give my baby a little bit of a updated look, so i was thinking putting in a new grill and headlights would totally give it that look. If anyone knows the answer to my question please tell me

thanks Ryan

Yeah, I'm assuming anything up until 1998 will bolt right in. I'm fairly certain you'll have to splice in a new headlight connector, but the rest should just bolt right on.

Try Pickups Northwest. They're local to me, but they ship anywhere you want.

My internet is being slow, but Google them and I'm positive they'll have what you need.

Ya that's what i kinda figured. Pretty much everything from 88-98 you can bolt on. I just wanted to make sure before i went out and bought these headlights, and then find out they don't work!!!! You said that i'll have to splice a new end on???? Any of my local automotive stores should have these I'm assuming. I looked at that site you told me to but it's only for classic trucks, unless I'm just not looking at teh right site or in the right place.

They do specialize in classic trucks, but if I recall correctly, they can do just about anything as far as pickup truck restoration. They have a pretty awesome catalog.

There are also some 88-98 Chevy/GMC specific parts and restoration suppliers, I was just trying to give the local guys a shout-out.

As for the connectors: What you're running now is probably an H6054 (its been a few years, my part numbers might be off) sealed beam headlight, which works the low and high beams off one plug. What you'll be converting to is a 9004 and 9005 (again, not sure on the numbers) system with two separate plugs for the hi and low beams. Either a wiring diagram or a volt meter can tell you which wire goes where. Then a few minutes with a wire crimper, and you're set.

Wow you really know you stuff. Ya i don't know the part numbers either but yes there the single sealed beam headlights with high and low beam. So it's just the two connectors and that it???? So i wouldn't need to do any other mods beside that connector on both sides then. I'll be sure to look into that catalog!!! I really appreciate the help I'll be sure to post the finished pics when i get around to putting in the headlights

Cool, I can't wait to see it.

Yeah, if you're going to the composite headlights (which, if you're going to the trouble, you might as well), you'll rewire the headlights. Should be easy.

I'm guessing the parking lamps are just 1157s, so the socket should fit in the new lamp.

I think i found the headlights that i want. It's an 8 piece projection headlight kit. The kit includes both driver and passenger headlights, corner lights and bumper lights. in the pic of them it shows a bulb going into the corner lights. On my truck i don't have said bulb in the corner light. I have no idea how well these headlights are going to work. I found them on ebay so i don't know. I would like to get a second opinion from someone who knows what there talking about. IF i get the projection headlights is there going to be even more wiring for me to do??????????

Maybe you could take a picture of what you have now, and provide a link to what you're looking at. That would help me visualize it a bit better.

I am awed by Mort's memory for part numbers, but I wanted to add one:

1157 is a bayonet mount dual filament bulb, like you'd use for a combined brake/tail light.

1156 is the same type of bulb, but with one filament, like you'd use for a taillight only, side marker, blinker, or parking light.

(And, for more modern cars, the numbers are 3157 and 3156, with the flat plastic connector where you just push the bulb into the socket).

Okay, that helps a ton.

The bulb on the side, which you don't have, is just a #194 that runs with the parking lights, but not the turn signals (no dual filament). If you don't have this anywhere, you can just tap into the parking light wire and run a new socket. You can get it clear, or amber, depends on your preference.

MrSVTGal is right, as he usually is, about the 1156/1157 stuff. You'll need amber bulbs (or Silverstar or Chrome/amber) for the turn signals, and I think they're dual filament 1157s in both the sockets on the bottom.

And those projectors aren't necessarily more wiring, just different wiring. My wife's car has them, and it's just a driving light bulb. I would hope that the directions with the kit would tell you which ones to get. Looks like the hi-beams are a regular bulb, though, which I think is a 9005, but any parts-store guy could tell you that for sure.

Ya i was planning on Changing the grill, thats why i'm doing the conversion. I found a nice billet grill for a dual or composite headlights. They don't make a nice billet grill for the single headlight trucks. Thanks for everyone who helped me out all your advice has helped me out alot
