Sheesh, I haven't built a computer in maybe 6-7 years or more but these newer monsters are nothing like I remember. I swear there wasn't anywhere near the wires that these machines have. I'm glad they went away from the ribbons though, what a PITA they where.
Heres what I'm building:
Ultra X-Blaster ATX Black Mid-Tower Case with Clear Side, Front USB, FireWire and Audio Ports
Ultra LSP750 750-Watt Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready, SLI-Ready, 135mm Fan
XFX nForce 750a SLI Motherboard - NVIDIA 750a SLI, Socket AM2/AM2+, ATX, Audio, Video, HDMI, DVI, PCI Express 2.0, Gigabit LAN. S/PDIF, USB 2.0, eSATA, RAID
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Black Edition Processor ADO5400DSWOF - 2.80GHz, Socket AM2, 1MB Cache, 1000MHz (2000 MT/s) FSB, Dual Core, Brisbane, Processor, No fan
Ultra X-Wind Aluminum Socket K8/AM2 CPU Cooling Fan
2-Ultra Performance 120mm Case Fan - Dual Ball Bearing
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy
2-Sony DRUV200A/BR DVD/CD Rewritable IDE Retail Drive
Sabrent CRW-FLP2 Floppy Drive w/USB 2.0 Internal Card Reader & Writer (SDHC & Vista ready)
Corsair Dual Channel TWINX 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 2048MB)
2-XFX GeForce 9600 GSO Video Card - 768MB DDR2, PCI Express 2.0, Dual Link DVI, SLI Ready
2-Seagate 500GB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G
Microsoft Wired Keyboard 500 (Black)
Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 1000 (Black Pearl)

I'm having fun though but lift off won't be until next week when I recieve the 2nd video card & hard drive. With all the fans it should lift itself right of the desk!!

Rick

Sounds like a monster system.

What OS are you going to install?

I haven't decided yet, I have XP Pro & Vista. I ran into my 1st snag, the card reader uses an internal 10 pin usb & the darn wire is about an inch to short. No options on where I put the card reader so I ordered an extension.

You should know that only 3gb of ram will be available to either XP or Vista, unless you go to Vista 64 bit.

Yea Lynn, none of that high tech stuff for me.
When I have the $$ I'll more than likely go to Vista 64 but this has all but drained me dry of funds before Christmas, my wifes taken whats left for christmas shopping for the 8 grandkids.

Well, its all together until I recieve the 2nd HD, 2nd Video card & the 10 pin extension for the internal usb for the card reader. I could fire it off now but I want to wait until I have all the parts this way everything gets loaded @ once & its a 1 time configuration. Yea, I'm lazy! I still need to find my Office 03.

LOL, I don't think my punny little computer needs to go to that extreme. I have 1 fan in front pulling air, 1 fan in the rear exhaust air, the side cover also has a funnel type exhaust to remove heat pulled from the cpu fan, it also has a vent above the video cards as well. The power supply has the rear fan & the huge fan on the side nearest the cpu. Like I said lift off will be probably next week but I did buy some decent fans so hopefully it won't sound like a 747 taking off.

You should be fine, as far as noise. The larger fans turn slower and make a lot less noise. My system has 1-120mm fan in front and 1-120mm fan in the back plus an 80mm fan in the the cover. All three of those fans are connected to the motherboard, so they are speed controlled based on temperature. The power supply has it's own 120mm fan which is also speed controlled and then there is the CPU fan. Even with all those fans running, this is a very quiet system.

If I have several things running at once and the system starts to warm up a bit, I can hear the rpm of the fans pick up a bit, but only for a short while.

Unless you are planning to really over-clock the CPU, the fan system you have should work real well and be pretty quiet.

If you do decide to move to Vista 64 bit, check your applications first. There are a lot of programs that will not run on the 64 bit Vista, including (I think) Office 2003.

Thanks Mark, I didn't know all the fans are speed controlled by the MB if connected to it, I just thought the cpu fan was controlled. Good to know & I'm not sure if I'm going to overclock or not, its an option that I will decide on when I get the computer running & see how it performs.

Not all fans are speed controlled by the MB.

Check your MB manual and in the bios setup to be sure that the MB can control the fan speed. Also, the fans have to have the small three pin connectors to attach to the MB stakeouts. The third wire (usually white) is the speed control wire. If you only have 2 wires, red and black, on the fan connector, they will always run at full speed.

Fans with LED's can produce some unwanted light shows when hooked to the speed controlled motherboard stakeouts. Most speed control used by the MB is accomplished by changing the voltage supplied to the fan. This also changes the voltage supplied to the LED's.

That black edition processor is specifically built for overclocking. The 5000+ is a very cool running processor, so no you don't need water cooling, and you could at least get a .5ghz boost without changing a thing.

Thanks, thats what I've heard & I read in the MB manual that I need to change a jumper & then go into the bios wheres theres 3 settings for overclocking. I'm not sure if I'll overclock but I'll leave the option open.

Well, this became a huge PITA!. I tried loading my very old windows XP with ni Service packs & did the F6 to load the SATA drivers...NOT!
I got the blue screen of death so I 1st started changing bios settings, no go, disconnected 1 hard drive & reinstalled the jumper on #1 hd for 150 instead of 300, no go, took out the sound card, nope, went back to 1 vid card, nope.... I was getting the feeling all along that my version of XP had no clue so I went down & spent $269 with tax for Vista home 32 bit. It took right off, I've loaded windows & the MB drivers & am downloading updates right now, then I guess my HD software needs to be next to see the other SATA HD. Whats amazing is that Windows see's all 4 gigs of ram????

Wish me luck, I'm going to need it.

With all the bad press Vista receives, it is so much better at identifying hardware and getting the drivers installed than XP ever was. I have been using Vista for almost 2 years now and I find it to be very stable.

BTW, Vista 32 will be able to see your 4gb of memory, but it will only use 3gb for addressable ram. The other 1gb can be used by the OS for other things like caching, etc., but not for running programs.

I was having issues with running my sata dvd burners on the same controller as my hard drives. Initial setup would run fine, but windows would crash on startup every time. I ended up installing windows using an IDE dvd drive and adding an extra SATA controller later for the new ones. (that's what that little card is in the picture)

Wheres the radiator cap on that water cooled PC?

Do you add water or Glycol?

The whole idea of mixing electrickery and water inside the one box frankly scares the begeebers outta me!

Course - we have 240 volt AC electrickery here so one water leak inside that box and your gonan end up like Yahoo Serious on a Phyllis Diller bad heir day!

Cheers!

Other than the power supply, it's all low voltage DC inside. Usually, if a leak happens, the computer isn't affected once it dries unless the drives get wet. I use spring water + water wetter in it.

Well, this thing runs excellent, all software loaded. I did have 1 glitch where both DVD burners stopped working & vista said a bad driver. It was actually 1 of the windows updates & its pretty well known by MS of what the problem is, I had to go in to the registry & do a bit of editing after reading about the fix on the internet.
