I recently had the pleasure of attending a supporter appreciation day at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. It used to be called Seattle International Raceway, for you old-timers.
We drove down and were shown right to our 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS cars. The cars were basically stock, except for larger anti-sway bars, a 4-point roll cage, racing seats, and 5-point harnesses. The cars will run for about 3000 miles, and then be sent back to Bret Chevrolet to be sold as used cars.

This is the car I drove.

A rear view. This is the view that JD would see most of if he and I were on the track together.

A basically stock interior.

Mort's dad, without whose radio show this would not have been possible.

A big thanks goes to ProFormance Racing School.
The drive around the 2.5 mile road coarse was, at times, nerve racking. As I am used to oval tracking, I'm not used to hills on a track. This wouldn't be so bad, except the fastest way around it is to accelerate at these hills, which you can't see over. Uh huh. Going 110 miles per hour 6 inches away from a retaining wall in somebody else's car on a bumpy track also causes one to mentally calculate the payments on a car that is sitting in a junkyard.
My driving impressions of the Chevy Cobalt SS was overwhelmingly positive. The supercharged EcoTech four cylinder ran like a bank CEO towards a government handout, accelerating all the way through fourth gear. The brakes were also very confidence inspiring, and when properly modulated, could kick the tail out predictably. The Cobalt did not understeer as much as other front-drivers, possibly due to vehicle dynamics, but also possibly due to the spirited driving practices of my guide and myself.
Big ups go to Tracy Brandenberg of Pacific Raceways and ProFormance Racing School for putting this all on.
