Here is my latest project. It's almost complete, just have to put some finish on a few of the trim pieces.

This is a cradle that I built for my Granddaughter, due to arrive in March, 2009. This is by far the most difficult and complicated piece I have done so far. Had to teach myself some new skills to get this thing done.

The darker wood is cherry and the lighter wood is maple. All pieces were rubbed with boiled linseed and oil to pop the grain and then top-coated with 10 coats of Formby's Tung Oil Finish in low gloss. Smooth as a babies ass!

Great job Mark! The style is very reminiscent of things I've seen done by carpenters and wood cutters in Bavaria. You've got one heckova talent there Mark!

WOW! That is gorgeous! You have some serious talent.

Any chance you would make one of those for a fellow TB member, if they payed you of course?

Lining up the spindles turned out to be pretty easy, they just sit in 1/2" holes drilled into the top and bottom rails.

Putting on finish was the really hard part. All of the parts had to be buffed out between coats. It took about an hour and a half to buff out the parts followed by about another hour of wiping off the dust and applying the next coat. Did that for the first 5 coats. My hands still ache.

Thank you.

I wish I had the time to make more of these. But then I would not even begin to know how much to sell them for. I don't work very fast on these projects so they usually take many, many hours to complete.

Well, if you do ever decide to start making them with the intent to sell. LET ME KNOW!!! I just can't get over how beautiful it is.

Very, very nice Mark. Did you turn the spindles, or buy them?

Don't have a lathe, had to buy the spindles. It was actually a complete kit, all 22 spindles, the turned knobs for the hangers and lock pins, the mushroom plugs to cover the screw holes, and the plans. You could get the kit with either cherry or oak parts. I ended up using some birch mushroom plugs for the cradle sides to contrast with the cherry.

Well it looks great. Nice choice on the cherry. I like oak, but feel it has been used so much over the years that its nice to see other types. Cherry, maple and Mahogany are my favs.

I have also used a lot of oak. It is very nice to work with, but you do have to be careful working with that coarse grain. It takes a lot of work to get a smooth finish, too.

I have been working with cherry and maple a lot more lately. They are both easy to work on, and you can get some really fantastic grain patterns.
