Hi everyone, need a bit of help here. I keep getting a low battery warning / ABS shuts off / stereo shuts off in my car.

I have a red top optima installed and it seems to be holding a charge. I can charge it to full capacity and the car will run fine for a few days. Starts fine, runs fine, rolls the windows up, ac fans blow but if i turn on the headlights, it will die in about an hour.

To me that sounds like the alternator is not charging at all, but i'm wondering if I should take it to the stealership. The car is under warranty (sort of) but i figure they will give grief because the car has been modified with the turbos. Short of putting in an optima, i haven't really modified the electrical system. it has a couple extra connections for oil pumps and stuff like that, but nothing major. The other thing it has is an steeda underdrive pulley, but i doubt that could be causing this issue since the car doesn't idle when i drive it.

Any advice would be appreciated....

It sounds like an alternator to me. A bad cell in a battery would let it charge, and show its holding a charge, but as soon as you put a load on it, kaput. If you have under drive pulleys, you may have put more of a load on the car the times it is idling, wearing the alternator out prematurely. If its not too difficult, I'd pull the alternator and let a parts store check it. If it is bad, you may look into a custom built one, something that may hold up better. There is a way with an amp meter to check the back of the alternator, where the battery cable hooks up. If its the same voltage as the battery, its bad.

good info... unfortunately, the alternator is located under the intake making it almost impossible to get to the back of. think it's worth taking to the dealer or will they just tell me to get bent?

Mike do you have a Voltmeter? If so check the voltage output of the alternator. Simply start the car and put the neg and positive leads on the respective battery post and see how many volts you have. Should be 14.5 or more.

As for warranty i would take it in and the alternator has nothing to do with the Turbos and they in no way can cause the failure of the alternator. Howqever since you have a underdrive pulley they will void the warranty for that. I personally would not run under drive pullies as they have been known to cause premature alternator failures.

Here's an upgrade Mike

I'd take it in to the dealer. Best case they fix it for free, worst case you have to go someplace else. You paid for the warranty, use it.

Since it is still under warrenty. I say bring it in. They have to prove that the aftermarket batterie is the sole cause of you electrical problem in order to deniey your warrenty.

I have been reading alot about the Optima batterie and they are not the best batterie for fords. Most of the Lightning Guy over at NLOC and SVTperformance are getting rid of there Optima once they go bad because they are not lasting. Everybody is going with the napa gold or Motorcraft batteries.
Hell I just had my Optima go bad and it was just over a year old.

I have a yellow top that has lasted for several years. Of course, since I typed this, I am sure the son of a bitch will go out tomorrow.

You can start the car and measure the voltage on top of the batteries for your alternator.

Take it to the dealership. Like Dev said, they may cover it under the warranty, they may not, but they should still be able to troubleshoot the problem and/or fix it, you just may have to pay for the repairs.

The dealer will probably charge you for the diagnostic if they don't cover it and you take it somewhere else.

Any good mechanic should be able to test the charging system and also check to see if something is draining the battery.

yeah, i agree. it's time for a new alternator. The car ran on battery power for three days and finally gave it up today. Must have cranked it and run it 15 times. Probably 3 hours of drive time total.

Can't be the battery. I don't have a voltmeter and my neighbor who does is on vacation. But i'm watching that idiot gauge with the volts and it slowly drops just a little bit ever time i drive it.

Ok, so here's the question. Why a 200 amp alternator? I'm not running any kind of additional load, unless you count a radar detector and a kenne bell boost-a-pump.

PA performance makes a 130 amp alternator for about $100 cheaper. what's the logic behind going with the 200amp? I don't mind spending the extra 100 if there is a reason...

No reason I can see for the bigger alt if your current draw is never likely to exceed 130A.

Current draw in an electrical system is essentially a matter of resistive load and voltage. A higher capacity alternator will not charge the battery faster, stronger, etc. if your electrical system is only demanding 100A (for example), the extra capacity doesn't do any good.

BTW, I actually had a meter with me while I was in town this week. We could've checked your alternator output to verify the issue. But since you weren't available I had to settle for an evening with another local TB member, instead of working on your electrical system ;)
