As much as I hate to, I may get stuck having to get a new truck. I paid my '01 screw off earlier this year, and as it sits the odometer reads 120K. Problem is, work *may* have a policy that for a car allowance, I have to get something no more than 5 years old and < 100K miles. That being said, if I was looking for a diesel, which route would be better? I always wanted a 7.3 4x4 dually, but that would put me out of the range for the 5 year thing. I have heard good and bad about the 6.0, and not to much good about the 6.4 Fords. Thoughts on the late model Cummins? Any other opinions about what to stay away from, what to look for, etc would be greatly appreciated. I would probably sell my wife's trailblazer, give her my truck and get me something new. Also, I wouldn't plan on doing too much lift wise to the truck, maybe a few performance upgrades for better fuel economy. I know a car would be better, but around Houston, I am scared to death to drive a car, these fuckers are nuts.

| | I would avoid the 6.0 like the plaque to be honest. The 6.4 is Awesome but the fuel mileage is terrible with it. Based on what you need i say buy something 2-3 years old and stay with the gas engine | |

| I disagree with the buy used.. if you do, the interest rate will just go way up.. to counter the difference in price
and yeah, I wouldnt drive a small car in houston either, people drive way to fast on the free ways.. they dont leave you alone if you avoid the left lane.. cuz I'll be going like 5 over, and people keep flying by like Im stopped in the evenings..
even in the nice neighborhoods people drive like idiots, when Im over by ?montrose? and ?river oaks? where I have some family and some friends that live,... if you go too slow cuz your afraid of the abundance of cops, dont worry there are plenty of other people who dont care about tickets and drive like idiots in the area, cuz they can afford to..
buy as big of a truck as you can get and put some heavy duty ranchhand rear bumper on the back end of it..

| The 6.0 has a bad reputation because of the late '03 and '04 models. Neither of those fit into your guidelines, so you should be money to go ahead and search for an '05 and up 6.0.
There will still be some who preach the evils of 6.0's but they are far outweighed by those who love them. I have lot's of friends with 6.0's and only one has had a bad experience.
By buying used you run the chance of having any issues that the motor may have to already have been identified and addressed.
You have a great place right there in League City across the freeway from McCree just North of Gay that sells nothing but trucks. A lot of them are already equipped. Drive by and talk to them.

| | Good point about the used service history. Not all 6.0s were bad, and if they have a long service history already, you can count on it just getting longer. The 05-07s didn't have nearly the problems the earlier ones did, plus you get the cooler front end and the coil spring front. | |

| | any thoughts on the dodges? since everybody seems interested in a cummins swap, would that be a more reliable, better motor? Or are the trucks around the motor not worth a shit? | |

| My daughter and son-in-law have 2 Dodge (gas) trucks....2004 & 2007 I believe and they are holding up well. They put them thru the wringer too as they are used as work trucks (pulling a tandem axle trailer fully loaded) with the bed full of tools and material. I wasn't real crazy about the looks of them at first but they have grown on me....I wouldn't be afraid to buy one for my next truck. | |

| Screwd, You can not go wrong with a late model Common Rail 5.9. depending on what you want to do with it will determine what your going to need to replace. Watch out for the stock Tranny. Have not heard much good about them. | |

| | The cummins is a great motor, but they put it in the worst truck in my opinion. Thats why so many people go through the trouble of doing a cummins swap into a ford, you get the best of both worlds. As far as the 6.0 goes, like it was said above...the 03's and early 04's were trouble. The late build 04's through 07's are just as good as any motor out there. Mine hasn't given me a single problem (late build 04)...just a little EGR work when it was new, covered under warranty. | |
