I need some advice about a 01 ram 2500 cummins auto 4X2.
It belongs to my dad and he is thinking about selling it to buy a 3/4 ton gas eng truck of some sort.

What can be done to the cummins to help improve the fuel effiecency in the most cost effective way. My dad does construction and hauls lots of tools and materials and pulls trailers on a frequent basis. I'm tryin to see what can be done to help since I think it would cost my dad more driving a gas eng truck even if gas is cheaper.

Any ideas/advice greatly appreciated.

Simple mods.

the 98.5-02 Cummins are 24 Valve, VP pumped trucks.

Start with simple mods - Intake, exhaust.

Then, get some fueling boxes for a touch more fuel and timing advance - you'll net more fuel economy because you get more time to burn the fuel - and the increase fuel pressure allows you to reduce the injector duty cycle to cut down fuel used.

I forgot to mention that the truck has a 4" exhaust already on it when my dad bought it other than that I believe it to be all stock other wise. What do you recommend for intake/exh/ tuners etc?

Also when you say vp pumped does that mean variable pressure?
I'm pretty clueless about diesel tech stuff but want to learn more about them though.

What I'm reading here is your dad wants to reduce expenses. Keep in mind that, no doubt, DrSpeed's recommendations will help - but you have to factor in the cost of the modifications and what the return on investment is (how long before you recoup your money).

Good things to start with:

http://www.edgeproducts.com/product.php?pk=78&pvk=238

if you get a 7% increase, and doing some homework, with some assumptions...

$5.00 / gal Diesel

current MPG: 16
Cost per mile: $0.3125 / mile

new MPG: 17
Cost per mile: $0.2921 / mile

Savings of $0.0204 / mile

It would take you 15,000 miles to recoup the cost of the module.

So, to Tom's point, yes, figure out your finances. But start with an intake from aFe...

Yeah that's what I'm doing is investigating the options before he makes up his mind. Currently he said he's averaging 18 mpg and I really doubt a gas eng would get that kinda mileage constantly carring around close to 2,000 lbs of tools plus any other materials.

Maybe a V6 gas engine. But who wants one of those in a full sized truck?

You can see a huge savings in oil and filters with an oil bypass system. Guys with the FS-2500 average 30,000 miles between oil changes, with perfect oil samples. It also completely removes wear particles for a 2X to 3X extension in engine life. Works on tranny too. Check it out at www.fs2500.com. I do have specials running.

Thanks for the heads up on your site. But as mentioned this is my dads truck and anything done would have to be simple, quick mods I can do myself in a few hours on a weekend as my dad doesn't do any maintenance or work on his truck, but I do appreciate any/all ideas that could help.

Ironically my dad did get a new vehicle but hasn't traded the dodge yet. Instead my parents traded in my mom's crown vic for an 07 ford Edge, they say it's getting 28-30mpg's on the hwy and about 22-25 mixed driving which beats out the crown vic all around!
