Hi all... This whole analog TV to digital TV is a mess.
My grandma got a letter from the cable company that says: as of 6/10/08 although the following channels will remain in the existing package, they will only be avalible with a digital cable box on all of your televisions and the IO navigation package: TLC, A&E, E!, Sci Fi channel, TruTV, animal planet, travel channel and QVC
The cable company wants to "make this easy" and provide a cable box to handle the situation, however it is an added fee per month.
I asked the guy if the government issued coupons (boxes you can get a radio shack) would handle these stations, he said no you have to get it through cable company.
Basically I told my grandmother to hold off and see what she does or does not receive, its all BS, this is supposed to be government regulated and mandated and it is a flipping mess
Anybody know the truth?

| The over-the-air switch to digital has NOTHING to with cable or satellite TV.
Many cable companies have been pushing more channels up to the digital spectrum, so they can offer more channels and other features.
The converter boxes that you can get the coupon for are for older TV's that have no subscription services like cable or sat, they won't work in lieu of a cable box.

| | Kenny - this was mandated almost 10-years ago. Cable's solution is pretty straight forward; you want to receive a signal after 6/10 you'll need a converter box as the cable provider goes digital. The alternative is to get Granny off the cable and pull in whatever signals are available over the air via a gov't issued box. | |

thanks for the info... the cable company seems to be using the feb 2009 thing as an excuse to get us (the cable subscribers) to be forced into buying their box to handle the digital over the cable channels
what a big joke, maybe ill get my grandmother direct tv
So basically as the over the channels get pushed to digital rather then analog, the tv she has wont view them unless she has a tv with a QAM digital tuner?
the cable company is going to force people to buy a box for each tv in their house, its BS, for those with many tv's it may up the price of cable close to double, un real man
