A few weekends ago Jason and I got together and put together an install video of an exhaust kit on Project Truckblog. My goal was to put together a "Truckblog TV" show with perhaps a new episode every month that featured a true garage installation of some aftermarket product for Truckblog. We do it anyway, so why not film it? The result is here:
http://www.truckblog.com/story-1879-truckblog_tv_episode_1_video (article)
http://www.truckblog.com/video/TBTV001 (video)
You can also see it just going to www.Truckblog.TV
If you have problems viewing it, be sure to upgrade to Flash v9 www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
The entire production was done in-house by Jason and myself--we didn't outsource any of it, except for a few canned transitions! Even the entire intro video is of our footage from the past year.
We're looking for your HONEST feedback. We put Jason behind the camera and me in front of it because that's all we had to work with. So, please reply with you feedback so we know if we should move forward and how we can make it better.
Here are some questions to get you going:
1. What do you like/dislike about the episode?
2. Do you think we should use someone else as the host, or did I come off ok on camera? (this was new for me and I have to admit I'm not quite as comfortable as I'd like to be)
3. Do you like the videography? How could we be better about camera angles, etc.?
4. Do you like the intro piece? Is it too long or obnoxious? Do you have any recommendations to make it better?
5. What do you think of the editing, such as the transitions, audio, titling, etc.?
6. Do you think it should be more or less serious (us joking around more)?
7. Anything, and I mean ANYTHING else??
I hope you like it and Jason and I would appreciate your critiquing of our first big video.
Thanks for your help, and have a great weekend!
P.S. I know a few of you have already sent me emails about our first episode (thanks!) so don't feel inclined to re-post your comments here unless you want to!

| Not bad guys. 1. I like it 2. Chris you handsome devil, job well done for being a video virgin. For safety's sake on yours and the viewers part, I would suggest wearing safety glasses the entire time while underneath any vehicle. Maybe long pants also. Not to be too harsh, but those are muffler clamps not brackets. Do you always wear white when you work on vehicles? 3. Videography is good. 4. Intro is great. 5. All good. 6. Just right. Less serious might get too cheesey. 7. It would be great if you could find a repair facility to use. What vehicles will you be using for upcoming projects? I will be doing some mods on my Chevy within the next couple of months and would be more than happy to volunteer my truck and time for the show. Let me know. All in all, job well done. | |

| | I would have to say it was about right on the mark for you guys and it was pretty good. The only thinkg I could see improving it was is if Ash or Sandy was infront of the Camera. But other then that keep up the good work!! | |

| Thanks everyone for the outstanding feedback. Jason and I shot episode 3 earlier today and for our second attempt, it was so much better. A lot of your advice was taken into consideration and over the next few episodes hopefully we'll have it perfect.
We should have Episode #2 ready by Friday!

| Nice job Chris and Jason! I liked it...just one thing I noticed those brackets you kept referring to were exhaust clamps not brackets. Other than that it was very cool and I'm looking forward to the next episode. | |

| Thanks, Buzz. Even though the instructions said "clamps" for whatever reason I had "brackets" on my mind (go figure). That's the problem with video... you can't go back and change that stuff! LOL
The first episode was basically a screen test to see if we could pull it off... and I guess the attention to detail wasn't there. For the next episode we made sure I got it right!

No you cant .... Thats why we have Re-shoots in the biz. Just re-shoot the shots that are wrong. Wont take long. If its in dialogue where your installing something and you don't want to tear it apart and do it again, cut away to another shot or a new shot and run the new dialogue over it. Then cut back to your install shot. You can also put the new dialogue over a POV shot. There are many ways to get around it. Im sure you can come up with a fix.

Oh yeah, we have a retired Hollywood producer here. I forgot.

| Lynn, you're right... and I would but there are 3-4 instances and it's not a huge deal IMHO. Maybe one day when we're bored we'll conjure up a fix!
Sawblade, I'm a huge fan of Stacey's so that's probably why you see it come off a bit that way.
@Carnival Freak -- thanks for the feedback! I probably should wear safety glasses more often than I do :) As for my attire, well it was 90F+ in my garage! I'll probably be wearing shorts quite a bit now that summer is here and the temps are going to be that hot on a regular basis. White shirt: I knew I was going to trash the shirt so I wore one I knew would be tossed afterwards. One thing we learned is that white shirts are not a good thing because you can see the mic, and it gets real dirty fast. Episode 2 and future episodes I'll be wearing my dark blue Truckblog crew shirt like I had on at the end of the first episode.
If we can find a place to use nearby for the installs, that would be awesome, but it would have to be real close to where I live. The beauty of doing these video installs on the weekend is we don't have a lot to bother with when it comes to setup.
"What vehicles will you be using for upcoming projects?" We currently mostly have Ford trucks and one GMC Yukon (which is used in episode 2). It would be great to use your Chevy as well. I'll contact you via email so we can discuss some possibilities.
Thanks again everyone for the great feedback... we're still figuring it all out and having a lot of fun doing it.

| The video has been updated:
http://www.truckblog.com/video/tbtv001
Slight changes throughout the entire video, including the removal/editing of "brackets", updated credits, etc.
Thanks again for the feedback y'all! We're working on wrapping up the 2nd episode right now.

| All in all a great first effort.
Safety glasses were mentioned. If you have a scene filmed and you didn't wear glasses then maybe a disclaimer on the screen during that particular segment. I have seen numerous How-To shows do the text.
You did a good job of losing the radio announcer voice as the video went on and you became more comfortable.
If I was a novice, it would have been nice to know that I should spray my clamp bolts and the rubber grommets with WD40 to make removal easier.
Clothing - sounds like you have it addressed. A uniform makes it look more professional. TruckBlog Mechanics shirts for everyone!!
When showing the audience small parts, remove your gloves so we can see them better.
I would suggest you guys go buy some portable shop lights - the type on stands - For better light. Maybe make some bounce mats or diffusers on them to diffuse the light better. It needs better light.
I like the transitions. Isn't the air ratchet already used though?
Looking forward to number 2 - The video that is. Not that I don't enjoy a good number 2. I just mean.... Oh Never mind!

| Nice work seems you learned the hard way that it is easier to just remove all the hangers and install them on the ground. Then just bolt them all back together.
What I really like about it though is the fact that it wasn't some big stage production and is great for the do it yourselfer.
