| On axle bearings... if they are non-tapered roller bearings that simply press into the ends of the axle tubes, then you don't have to repack them (they get splash lubed by the gear oil in the rear end housing). But, if you remove an axle and feel ANY lip on the axle where the bearing rides, you should replace it - that sucker can generate enough heat when it fails to weld the axle to the housing. Just press the new bearing in a slightly different length (with a hammer and big socket, usually) so that it rides in a little bit different spot on the axle. While you are at it you should replace the rubber axle seal that presses into the end of the axle tube - when they get old and hard they start wearing a thin line into the axle that not only can leak but also can serve as a stress riser where the axle can fail.
For tapered bearings (like the ones on the front hubs of almost all vehicles), I'd inspect/repack/replace them about as often as brake pads... 50k miles at the most.
