What have you done since this happened?

How is the computer acting now? Did it continue to boot and load Windows? Where are you now?

Haven't had any trouble with it. When I got home from work. I turned on the computer. The screen I got was the first pic (checking files and folders)and lasted about 10 mins. The second pic (chrecking free space) I had that go on for about 20 mins.
Third, Forth and fith pic I have never seen that before. That one is all the same I just couldn't fit the whole thing in the pic with out being to far away and not be able to read it.

The sixth pic. I have always gotten that. If it dose come up I can get on the net, If it dosen't come up I can't get on the net and have to restart the computer so it wil come up.

Ok. What is all that stuff.

All I know is how to turn it on and get on the net. That pretty much sums up what I know about computers.

Step by step instruction would be good it is not to much trouble.

"Scan Disk" is "chkdsk" in XP, and here's the source for that info:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

You can (and should) defragment your hard drive in XP under Start|All Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Disk Defragmenter. It may take a l-o-n-g time if you've never run the app before. Once you run it, run it again. Then use the menus in the app to schedule a weekly defrag for sometime when the computer will be on, but you are not likely to be using it.

^^^ Thanks, I will give it a shot tomorrow when I get off work.

Is there any special instruction that I have to do before defraging. I am using a laptop and not a desktop. I remember my brother saying something about turning off the screen saver while doing this. Now correct me if I am wrong, It has been a couple of years.

He's absolutely correct,...harddrive is on it's last legs...mine has been doing it for a year now...

I have a 40gig hardrive,...but I only use 7 gig of it,...so it keeps moving things around the bad sectors .

But If I used 30 gig of my 40 gig HD...it would of died longggg ago.....but because I don't use much of it,...it keeps moving things around the bad sectors,...which is what is keeping my computer alive.

Well, it could be a hard drive starting to go bad, but maybe not.

Before I went out and bought a new hard drive I would at least try an operating system reload. Do you still have your original OS disks that came with the notebook when you bought it?

Re-loading the OS isn't really that hard, but it can sometimes be a little tricky getting all the correct drivers for some Notebook PCs. If you have the original disk(s), you probably have everything you need.

If you don't feel comfortable doing the job yourself, try to find a local mom and pop computer shop to do it. When I had the store, we charged a flat rate fee(1 hour, $50.00) for an OS reload and we made sure that the system was ready to go when we finished, with all drivers installed. We also made sure to set up the users Internet access and email accounts, etc. If they had data, pictures, movies, etc., that they wanted to keep, we also backed those up and then restored them after the reload was completed.

If you bring it in to the shop, they should be able to tell you if the hard drive is going bad. I would not take it in to one of the big chain stores like Best Buy, Silo, etc., unless you have no other choice. They usually charge too much and don't do a thorough job (in general, and IMHO).

^^^ Thanks for the info. I am going to do the defrag and the Scan Disk first. If I am still having trouble, I will do the OS reload then.
