We have a Wireless G Broadband Router by Linksys. Everytime we go to connect to the internet with the PS3 it won't let us and boots all our other stuff off line. Then when we try again it doesn't have a problem. We have the router connected to our desk top in our bedroom. We also have a laptop, XBOX 360 and sometimes a PSP or Nintendo DS hook up too that all in other rooms of the house. When the PS3 finally connects it says it's 85% signal. Do we need a better router or is it something with the PS3?

Are your computers guarded against spyware very well? They can cause hundreds of connections without you knowing about it if you're infected. Also, if you use torrents or P2P software, try turning down the max connections settings. With too many connections, the router's memory gets full, and it gets unreliable.

What's the model number on the router? There's aftermarket firmware that is much more efficient than the original stuff depending on the model.

I absolutely HATE LINKSYS products. They have always been so difficult to work with, every person I have helped over the years I have replaced routers with belkin or netgear. I have almost not had any problems with those brands. Routers are just flaky sometimes, what you can try to do is goto their site and download a new firmware for the router. You can only update it from a computer that is plugged directly into is usually. This is the internal software that it uses to control itself, that might help.

It's also possible that someone is piggybacking on your signal. Is your router secured?

Thanks for the replies.
The router is very secure, so I guess later today when I have a bit more time I'll look around for those firmware updates. I'll also play around with the P2P.

Oh and the model # is WRT54G V8

It's the same one I have. I'd suggest the DD-WRT firmware for it. It's much more stable in general, and gives LOTS more options to control it.

Here's the TFTP client that the tutorial mentions...

I've never had an issue with my Linksys router. But, I'm not using them for gaming systems.

You can update the firmware as suggested with either the DD-WRT or the latest from Linksys.

DD-WRT fixed my x-box live problems on my x-box 360, but whenever I host games it still gives me some trouble - just not as much as it did before. One of the settings in the router setup with DD-WRT needs to be raised in order for it to help all the outbound connections.

I have verizon dsl and I have not been on in a few days because it wouldn't let me connect. and it didn't even see my wireless network. so I called the tech support and low and behold the router needed new firmware.
it was out dated and so they hooked me up and got me back on line.

maybe you router needs the same thing? an update on the firmware?

I still haven't messed with it yet. As long as the 360 works everyone in the house is fine. I'm going to try and figure it out later today.

Thanks again

Nope, there's a different process to follow for the v6.

Sorry it took so long for the reply but the firmware update seems to have worked. No one has been booted lately. It's nice to turn on the PS3 and the 360 at the same time and not have anyone complain that they lost connection.

THANKS!!!!!
