So I went to the Apple store at the mall and the cheapest iMac was $1199. Sure, it came with everything you need for computin', but is that really what they cost, or did they see me coming? And if I can get one cheaper, where?

That price sounds about right.

But before you compare that price to any of the sub $500 PC's do a feature by feature comparison. If you built or bought a quality PC with similar hardware, you would find that the prices are comparable. When I built my current PC it ended up costing around $1300.00. That did not include ANY software, not even the operating system.

You can absolutely get a cheaper PC, but then you will have a cheaper PC.

Yeah Mark pretty much summed it up. There are a couple options, check to see if you qualify for an educational or govt discount or check online for a refurb.

Mort -

If you want to start off a little bit cheaper, look at the Mac Minis. $800 should get you a really nice "desktop". You probably already have a monitor/keyboard/mouse.

my friend built his computer on this website, it took about 2 weeks to get it but it was well worth it. http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm . The computer he built glowed green and blue, it harnested the power of freakin' aliens and its uber fast. He spent about $900 too. Just another route for you Mort.

Well, we made an impulse purchase at Office Depot, so now I get to learn how to use Vista. Whoopee.

Oh well, maybe in a few years, or when we throw this one out the window.

you bought vista???man you're fuuuuucked. Take it back as it's the worst operating system ever. Or at least load xp on it.

For macs you can check www.dealmac.com which post up good buys or go to the refurb section at the apple store online...the cheapest new mac is a 1.83ghz mac mini which retails for $600. All the used ones seem to go for 4 to 500 which isn't that great when you can get a new one for 100 more.

I have been using Vista on my home/work computer for several months now. I find it to be much more stable than XP was. It takes a little getting used to, since things work differently, but the added security and user interface features make it well worth the effort to learn.

I would definitely have to disagree with the statement that it is the worst operating system ever. Can you say ME?

I have heard that a lot. I guess my experience with Vista is different.

Of all those that have said 'it sucks', has anyone said HOW it sucks? I don't really know what 'it sucks' means. Is it slow? Does it crash? Does it not run the programs you want to run? Or is it just different and no one wants to spend the time to figure it out?

I remember when XP first came out. It Sucked!! Big time!

I just happened to check out the refurb section on the apple store yesterday and picked up a 1.83ghz, 80gb hd 5400rpm,512mb ram mac mini for $479! What a steal. I also bought 2gb of ram off a computer site for $45.

I can't wait for it this week. I've wanted to dive into final cut pro and that associated software for a while.

I'm sticking with XP x64 until SP2 comes out for Vista 64. I had RC1 and RC2 of Vista and I was not impressed. At the time, nothing supported it, it was crash prone, and a major resource hog.

I had ME. I couldn't really tell the difference from 98 other than it was cheaper to buy.
