I got a tip from a local guy on the Sawmill Creek web site about someone that was selling some 60+ year old oak planks in Fitchburg, Ma., which is only about 20-30 minutes drive from me.

The story is this. The guy bought an old paper mill/warehouse building. He set up his machine shop business in part of the building and is in the process of re-habbing the rest of the space for offices, manufacturing, etc. Whatever the new tenants want, really. In the process of the remodel, he has been removing these oak planks from the walls of the buildings. They were apparently nailed to the walls to protect them from hits from machinery, fork trucks, etc. So he currently has these huge stacks of oak planks and doesn't have a need for them. So he puts an add on Craig's List and a couple other places to sell them for $15.00 each. You can pick through the piles and choose whichever ones you want.

These planks are 2.5" to 4.5" thick, 8" to 10"+ wide and 8' to 16'+ long. These are some big, heavy planks.

12/4(3") red oak around here sells for about $6.50 per board foot. I picked up 10 planks that were all at least 3" thick by 8" wide and all were 12'+ in length. @ $15.00 each, that works out to about 60 cents per board foot!

This is what I got:

The fun part was hauling them home. 12 foot long oak planks loaded into my 5.5' short bed pickup. I tied them down with about 50 feet of 3/8" braided nylon rope. They did not move.

Nice score!

You really ought to invest in a bed extender though - and a red flag!

Yup!

The red flag would have been easy, I just had no idea what I was going to find once I got there.

Wow, that's an incredible score... I'm jealous as hell.

Only similar story I have... Years ago, I was given a ton of pine planks that were used in a 120 year old victorian as wall covering. The buliding had gone through a fire and my younger brother somehow ended up with a pile of these boards. After storing them for a few years, he gave them to me. I've built quite a few pieces out of it.

Any specific ideas on how you're going to use them?

I just ordered the Darby Extend-A-Truck load support from Amazon. I'll be ready next time. It even comes with the red flag.

I haven't got a clue! I'm sure the Wife will have some ideas.

I'm still working through the 4x4x8' beams I bought 10 years ago. You can see some of them stacked under my miter saw stand, to the left of the planks. Got about 10-12 left, stickered and covered with a tarp out in the back yard.

This is a picture taken by a couple of guys from the Sawmill Creek web site. They are standing by one of the piles of these oak planks. There are 2 more piles about the same size. These are just the planks that have been removed from the walls so far. In the background you can see the outside wall with many, many more of these planks still attached to the walls. If I had the cash and a place to store it, I would absolutely be going back to pick up more of this wood.

Wow, that's a great find. I'm tempted to go out and grab a few myself.

Do you have a metal detector? It looks like I can see some nails and stuff in your pics, would hate to ruin a planer knife or re-saw blade on that stack...

I do have a metal detector, but it shouldn't be needed. The boards were mostly nailed horizontally to the framing using 60d nails, so you can see all of the nails that were left in. Some were lagged to the framing or were mounted with steel angle brackets. Most of the lag bolts have already been removed.

You can pick through the piles and find boards with no hardware left in them. Of the ten I got, only three still have nails in them.

Let me know if you plan to take drive down there. I wouldn't mind going back again and I can bring the detector. If there is any hidden metal, we can mark the spots.

Good timing. Looks like another 4-8" of snow today!
