i am about at wits end here with my truck and could use some help. Does anyone know what transmission is in a 1992 k1500? i have researched all the web sites i can and the gm number i got off the outside of my transmission isn't found on any of the sites that are offered. i have had to dig deep to get any info on transmissions for this year and it turns out there is like 3 of them. My vehicle is a four wheel drive and is a 5 speed. is it a hm290, a 5lm60, or a nv3500 or an mg5. I am thouroughly frustrated. when i called the dealership they told me they no longer give that info over the phone. The part number on the cast is GM48679095. If anyone can help i would so appreciate it. Thanks
Brian

According to this, it's either a 700R4 or a 4L60E

^^^ Those are automatic transmissions, he said he has a 5 speed.

And a dealership parts department might be your best bet. I tried Google, and it didn't turn anything up.

Thanks, i was concerned whether or not it would be compatible with a 305 or 350. This 6 gun is just killing me in gas.lol at least a 8 would push it a little easier.

A 305 should work with it. You have a V6 you say? Same bellhousing. A 4.3 is basically a 350 minus two of the cylinders. I'd go with a 305 if you're concerned about fuel mileage, they're actually not too bad.
