Our primary home pc is about 2 years old now, and we're about ready to move on to the next one. I have a few specific questions, then just really looking for overall general opinions from folks.

Transferring data (mostly pictures, really..... a handful of Word docs, but we could do without those is we needed to). Is it as easy as loading up an external drive and transferring?

We currently use outlook express (me) and outlook (the wife) for our individual email. Does mac offer a way to have two separate email programs?

Any other general input?

Yep, it's easy... just plug the external drive in and copy them over. When you open iPhoto it will ask you if you want to import any photo's...just direct it to where you saved them. Once it is done importing, you can delete the pictures you transferred from the external drive because iPhoto copies them to it's own directory.

Email: yes, you can set up multiple accounts with Apple mail. If you choose to use a different email program..you can purchase Microsoft Office 2008 for the MAC. It comes with Entourage (which is essentially Outlook for the MAC)...Again, you can set up multiple accounts and I find that Entourage is much better than Outlook. Come to think of it, your new MAC will come with a trial version of Office already installed...so you can decide which program you like. Personally I set up my email for IMAP (gmail)...that way I'm not hogging up hardrive space with thousands of downloaded emails, everything is synched online and can be checked from any computer.

Once you go MAC...you'll never go back

If you weren't so busy with your life and career and stuff, you'd know that he already has an iPhone.

I've also been considering going Mac. Any issues you've had living with a Mac in a PC world?

It's dead simple. I can even spend some phone time with you if you like to walk you through it.

So that's why he want's a MAC...to go with his iPhone!

Well then...he'll have to get an Apple TV with is now 802.11n enabled, bridge an Airport Express to an Airport Extreme Base Station so he can stream music and still retain 802.11n only.

Mort...the only thing is you don't get any viruses Absolutely no issues man.

I've also heard that you can put a PC mouse on one, so you can have the scroll ball and the right click button. Is this true?

Mort, your playing with me now...I can tell ..yes you can still have your little ball and Microsoft mouse. All desktop MACs now come with a scroll ball on the mouse anyway...and a ctrl click is the same as a right click.

Thanks. The last time I used a Mac, the screen was in black-and-white. The hard part will be convincing the wife that its the right thing to do. But she'll come around.

Thanks for the info folks. And thanks for the offer Brian. I may take you up on this if I do pull the trigger. I'm really interested in the airport deal so I can play my iTunes stuff through my stereo (it's no fancy setup though) if possible. I have no idea how that works. Shoot, with the iTunes movie rentals and purchases, the apple tv might be cool too.

Greg -
We've got on Airport Extreme for the main firewall/wireless network, plus I also hang a 250GB USB HDD off it for a general fileshare. Then I've got 2 airport expresses plugged into 2 zone inputs on the whole house audio gear, so we can stream iTunes playlists to various rooms. There's an AppleTV in the family room where we do most of the "casual" TV viewing.

For the airport express, you just get a 1/8"->RCA cable, like what you use to jack an iPod into an aux input, and plug that into an unused input on your stereo. Then when you setup the express, you give it a name. When you go to play an iTunes playlist, there is a drop-down menu in the bottom-left corner that will list all output options, you pick with station to stream to and hit play.
