Ok-- you all already know I'm a moron, so I don't even need to put a disclaimer about that anymore, right?

I bought a backup camera and monitor combo at Costco the other day. Great little unit, easy to install (about 20 minutes) and for $75 I figured it was a good buy. The connection between the camera and the monitor is wireless. The monitor came with a cig-lighter power cord, and also a hardwire kit that I could use. My dash is ripped apart right now anyway (patterntek has several pieces of it for a little hydrographic makeover), so I figured I'd use the hardwire kit. It was a snap. The instructions said I needed to go to the fusebox, but I tapped into the back of the cig-lighter directly, and it workes perfectly.

So in trying to find a good location for the monitor, I realize that the location that is the most natural for me to look at when in reverse, will require more wire length than came with the hardwire kit. The wires are very thin and there are 3 of them. My question here is, to lengthen these 3 wires, can I just find any old insulated wire, that is roughly the same gauge, and splice it into the existing wires to make them longer?

Yes.

Most likely just stranded copper wire.

The only wire you really need to worry about is stuff used for thermocouples.

If you need some schtuff, I can send you a care package with everything you need, minus the solder and solder gun.

And which pattern are you gonna get at patterntek?

BTW, the camera's $79, not $75.

LOL-- so the text message you sent me was from inside Costco, wasn't it? Nice.

There is a Grainger about 10 feet from where I'm sitting right now, so I think I'll just walk over there and pick up some wire and some connectors. I don't think I'll do any soldering-- using some connectors would work the same, right?

And the pattern I'm using is supposedly a new one. I haven't even seen a sample yet, but it's supposed to be black, white and silver camo.

So you want to pay 55.99$ for 10 feet of wire? I would solder the connectors..makes it cleaner and easier to deal with. Butt connectors are there as a "only if I had to" kind of thing...

No-- I won't pay the $55.... I'll use the 'back door' and borrow some of their actual in-house supplies, rather than buying anything new.

Ok-- I'll solder then. I have that stuff here too.

I'll let you know how it goes. I plan on mounting it up on the a-pillar.

I've been told that I sneak in through the back door like an unexpected burglar.

Just make sure that you get the same color wires. It's very important that the colors match. You can paint the new wires if they don't come in the same colors.

Ok, so, an 'unexpected' burglar?
As opposed to, what, a burglar that was invited?

And, btw, Dev is exactly right. If the colors don't match, the electricity will have a very hard time finding it's way to the device.

I couldn't find green with a white stripe, so I got black, painted it green, then used whiteout and a thin tipped brush to paint the white stripe. It's not perfect, but the white stripe does match up to the other wire at each end.

At least you're giving it a shot. My brother-in-law was disqualified from being an electrician in the Navy because he's colorblind. What a quitter.

As long as it is still green, the electricity (probably) won't care. Just watch for smoke when you turn it on the first time.

Too late. I couldn't find an exact green match, so I took ALL the wiring out and began to repaint it all (both the original, and the spliced in wire) so they'd work together. Well, I ran out of paint. BUT!!!!! There is a powder coater next door, so I'm having them powder coat all the wires the same color.

It should be up and running by tomorrow.

Excellent, Greg! Have you considered chrome? I think that'd look sharp!

LOL.... funny you should mention chrome... all the hardcore Jeepers TOTALLY respect and dig chrome. Since I'm overly concerned with what other folks think about my taste in rides, I may want to consider that route!

Don't forget to do the tires. I love chrome plated tires. So shiny.

And maybe paint the wheels flat black.

I'm only chroming the tread area of the tires. Duh! If I did the sidewalls, the glitter armor all would never stick!
