This is a Dresser Valet that I made for my son for Christmas. I ran out of time before Christmas, so I had to give it to him unfinished. I finally got around to completing the project last weekend.

This piece is made from solid cherry with cherry plywood for the top panel, drawer bottom and the bottom of the trays in the back. The top panel is covered with leather. the bottom of the drawer and the sliding organizer in the drawer are also lined with leather.

The finish is boiled linseed oil topped with several coats of clear shellac. After rubbing out the shellac I topped it off with paste wax applied with 0000 steel wool.

Well, only the things I show to people.

I have a very large pile of scrap wood in the back yard.

Beautiful work Mark. I like your natural finish work, and the way you mix mediums (wood/leather). Mark of a real craftsman.

The leather was actually my Son's idea. It was quite a challenge getting it aligned properly. I used contact cement to hold it in place. When that stuff grabs, it does not let go. I had originally just left the top and drawer bottom as cherry plywood.

This was also my first time using boiled linseed oil and shellac. The oil was easy, but the shellac dries so fast it was difficult to get a nice smooth coat. I ended up buying a rattle can of shellac and sprayed on some very light coats. It ledt some orange peel, but that was easily smoothed out.
