Its a new year, and, 44 days from this posting, a new NASCAR season. This thread is mainly for newer members that wish to partake in the enjoyment, but I've also tweaked a few things for this year to make some things a bit more interesting.

WHAT IS THE TRUCKBLOG CUP?

The Truckblog Cup is a friendly NASCAR picking thread, a new one every week, where Truckblog Cup members (and immediate family) compete for points. Every week, usually on Friday afternoon, I or another member will post the starting lineup for the NASCAR Sprint Cup (formerly Nextel Cup) race that weekend. I will divide the field into five groups based on qualifying order. You must pick the one (1) driver from each group that you think will finish highest.

For example:

Group 1
1 Carl Edwards
2 Martin Truex Jr.
3 Jeff Gordon
4 J.J. Yeley
5 Johnny Sauter
6 Jimmie Johnson
7 Greg Biffle
8 Tony Raines

Group 2
9 Kurt Busch
10 Kasey Kahne
11 Casey Mears
12 Jeff Burton
13 Ryan Newman
14 Juan Montoya
15 Denny Hamlin
16 Elliott Sadler
17 Dave Blaney

Group 3
18 Matt Kenseth
19 Paul Menard
20 Clint Bowyer
21 Tony Stewart
22 Brian Vickers
23 Jamie McMurray
24 Patrick Carpentier

Group 4
25 Reed Sorenson
26 Sam Hornish Jr.
27 Jacques Villeneuve
28 Aric Almirola
29 Sterling Marlin
30 Johnny Benson
31 Joe Nemechek
32 Bobby Labonte

Group 5
33 Ricky Rudd
34 Kevin Harvick
35 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
36 Kyle Petty
37 David Stremme
38 Kyle Busch
39 Robby Gordon
40 Jeremy Mayfield
41 David Ragan
42 David Gilliland
43 Bill Elliott

Your picks might be:

1. Jeff Gordon
2. Ryan Newman
3. Tony Stewart
4. Johnny Bensen
5. Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

See how that works? No problemo. After you do that, you pick the first driver out of the race, whether it be by accident, mechanical failure, or just shitty driving. This year, that will be a 50 point bonus, up from 20 last year. You may post your picks and edit them until the green flag drops (according to the time on NASCAR.com), but the time stamp on your post will tell the tale if you made it or not. Any posts or edits after the green flag drop will be disqualified.

The official driver points from NASCAR.com will determine your score, along with the first out bonus if you correctly guess the 43rd place finishing (or not finishing) driver. Sometimes I'm a little slow doing this, so if you're so inclined, add them up and post.

SO THE MOST POINTS AT THE END OF THE SEASON WINS?

You'd think so, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong. Just as the Sprint Cup does, for the first 26 races we go on cumulative points alone to determine position. After that, we start The Chase. The top 12 Truckblog Cup players will predict what order the top 12 Sprint Cup drivers will finish. The top TBC player will get matched with their first choice, the second place player will get the first choice that isn't taken, on down the line. The player that is matched with the Sprint Cup Champion will also be the Truckblog Cup Champion. Last year's winner was Buzz.

SO WHAT, DO WE WIN MONEY OR SOMETHING?

No, that would be internet gambling, which is illegal. However, whoever is the Truckblog Cup Champion wins the Truckblog Cup. It is one of these bad boys:

A Truckblog beer stein from CafePress.com, courtesy of your pal, Mort. Past winners include Buzz and Fordgirl. I can't vouch for the quality of the stein, as I have not won one myself (grrr), but I'm sure they're great.

SO WHAT'S NEW THIS YEAR, MORT?

A few things, not many.

- First out bonus goes up to 50 points instead of 20
- A 50 point bonus will go to the weekly winner. In the event of a tie, both winners will get the bonus. It will look like this on your score tally: JD - 743 + 50

HORSERACING FORMAT

Some weeks the Sprint Cup doesn't race, but that doesn't mean we have to take the week off. The NASCAR Nationwide Series (formerly Busch Series) still races, and we'll do that the way we would pick a horserace. You'll pick three drivers to win, place, and show (1st, 2nd, and 3rd). So:

Win: Jamie McMurray
Place: Kevin Harvick
Show: Kasey Kahne

First out: David Gilliland

If you get one pick right, 100 points. Two picks, 250 points. Three picks, 500 points. But they have to be in the right order, so if you picked that and it ends up:

Kevin Harvick
Kasey Kahne
Jamie McMurray

You get nothing. Them's the breaks, kid.

ANY LAST WORDS, MORT?

Not really. I appreciate the sportsmanship of all the members over the 2 1/2 years I've been doing this. Sometimes I don't get right on some things, like updating standings, or whatever, and nobody bitches and moans.

Have fun. Use this thread to ask questions and make suggestions.

That's the cool thing about it: You can put as little or as much effort into it as you want. You can either take a stab in the dark, like I did last year, or read and research your picks, like I did the year before.

Another comment I get regularly about the Truckblog Cup is that people find they enjoy watching the race and following the series more because they have somewhat of a stake in it.
