| Believe it or now Coke the soda does take rust off. You will have to do a little scrubbing but it works. Or if you can take the barrel of the stock try this it was on the power block a while ago http://www.metacafe.com/watch/456478/rust_removal_tip/

| Is that the Remington 870 marine edition? I cant remember what the finish on those guns are like, but you should be able to get it nice and clean just using some gun oil and a rag as long as its just surface rust, not deep into the metal. Some sporting goods stores sell special rags that are meant to remove carbon deposits, lead and rust from guns and fishing equipment. Im not sure what they are treated with, but I have heard they work pretty well....if the gun oil and a rag doesnt work out, that may be the next best step.

| Greg,
You could go two differant ways depending on how bad the rust is. If it's really mild then you could use some Hoppes on a rag. If it doesn't come off with that I'd try Hoppes on some very fine steel wool (#000 or #0000).
To prevent rust I usually just rub down the barrel with WD40 after I shoot mine.
Good luck! | |

| I can't tell what type of finish is on the gun. I have recondition about 25 different Katrina gun. A couple have just minor surface rusting on the barrel. I just used some #0000 steel wool and some WD 40. It didn't affect the finish on the barrel, Just don't use to much pressure when scrubbing the barrel and other parts. Now remember that WD40 in not a lube it is a cleaner. That being said you will still have to wipe down gun after useing WD40 with a light oil or a wax gun cloth. I like the Hoppes gun cloth.
Check out my link http://s156.photobucket.com/albums/t5/bryanbag/ Page 2 and 3 and 4 have pictures of just 2 of the Katrina gun that I have redone. The Chinese SKS came out the best, cause it didn't have to much rusting. The M1 Carbine had some major rusting but I was able to get that one back to clean metal.I haven't started reblueing it yet just wait on the owner to give me the go ahead on reblueing.
Now if you are not willing to take the chance on messing up the finish with above sugestion since the gun dosen't belong to you, Check with a local gunsmith.
Ford-truck, That is a good was to remove rust from metal. I tryed that with on of the gun that I reworked. The only problem is if there is any rust under the finish of the gun that can't be seen it is going to cause the finish to flake off the gun. Thats where I messed up and didn't know that or think of that. I had to have the gun refinished
tinkerbellpixiehell. As I said above WD40 is not and oil it is a cleaner. That being said WD 40 can dry out and leave you unprotected. Don't get me wrong I used alot of WD40 when I was pulling the guns apart. I used it as a cleaner. Some of the gun I just sprayed down and a let them set since a had a couple of gun that had to get out first and after a couple of weeks the guns were dry and were not protected.
