The above rig has experienced multiple CPS failure (on my 3rd) and I'm beggining to realize this may not be the only problem - although no matter how many times the engine shuts down - I always seem to be able to recycle the key to get it to restart - failures run from 3 to 6 in quick succession. Always, the ck engine light and water in fuel light illuminate when this occurs. Once it has "failed" multiple times - the "failure" stops occuring and I can drive it for hours with no additional problems. Some days no failure occurs at all. The " failures" do not seem to be either engine temp or road specific - it seems to happen completely at random.
My questions - is it possible the failure is in the harness/connection assembly, or the OBD itself. Is it possible to monitor the OBD w/ a code reader while driving and if so which reader is the best for this engine.

Code reader while driving I'm not sure. But, you can go to the Ford dealer and ask them to hook up a "Flight Recorder" and do your normal routine for about a week. Then, take your vehicle back and they can hopefully pinpoint the problem. I don't know how much they would charge to do this. My neighbor had it done but his vehicle is still under warranty and they were able to resolve his issue.

You can get a MODUS tool from Snap On that will read the live broadcast on the OBD2 port.
But I would suspect that you have a more serious failure - I'd check the cam gear itself to see if it has walked off the nose of the cam. It seems as if there's contact between the sensor and the gear.

Are you replacing the CPS with an aftermarket variety or FORD OEM parts?
My truck died when the CPS went out and I replaced it with one I bought from AutoZone. The truck started up and drove fine afterwards...... Except when it rained. Every time it would rain my truck would die then I could start it right back up. If I was going over 20 MPH it would actually die and restart on it's own. This was crazy when it did that because it felt like someone was slamming on the brakes and letting off. It would do this for the entire duration of the rain storm.
I took the truck to FORD and the code came back CPS failure. Told the tech it was brand new and he told me the problem was because it was aftermarket. I laughed and went and had Autozone replace the CPS part under warranty. New CPS = same problem.
Replaced that one with a FORD OEM. I've been problem free ever since. RAin or Shine. TA
