Hey guys, just to make this clear...Im computer retarded. I can fumble my way around the internet and a few programs, and thats about the limit of my abilities.

Anyway, I just picked up a 120gig external/portable hard drive that connects through the USB and I want to back up my iTunes library. All of the songs I ripped off of my CD's wont be a problem because I saved them in another folder, so I can just copy those to the hard drive...but what about the songs I downloaded from iTunes? From what I can see (but I could easily be missing them) they are only saved in the iTunes. So is there any way to back up my entire library from iTunes into the portable HD? I see that I can back it up to a disk, but thats not what I want to do. It also says "export library", would this let me copy my library and add it do the HD?

I plan on backing up all of my videos and pictures too, just incase something happens to my computer. On that subject, is there any way to lock a folder so you need a password to open it so the old lady cant stumble on a few things I would rather not have her find ?

thanks,

Kyle

I think I found the folder where all of the mp3's were stored, even the ones I purchased from iTunes. So I should just be able to copy that folder and paste it into the hard drive right?

*edit*
Ok, I just added the folder with all of my songs onto the hard drive. All of the purchased songs have a little lock symbol on the icon, what does that mean? Will I be able to add these songs to a new computer, if mine crashes, or if I just buy a new laptop or something?

Anybody have any suggestions on locking a folder so its password protected?

Looks like you have the back-up figured out as far as locating the folder that iTunes stores everything on. Good job.

Now as far as the question about the lock symbol next to the purchased tunes. That is Apples copyright protection on all things purchased from them. It stops you from sharing the files with your friends and on P2P networks. The songs only work on iPods loaded under the password you created when you set-up your iTunes account.

There is a program that can crack this code but it is a pretty time consuming process. It's not click activated. You have to know a little programming to make it work.

I think when you buy MP3's from Walmart, they are copyright free. But I'm not 100 percent on that.

As far as locking away things that shouldn't be seen by others, sorry can't help.
