With no NASCAR until February, I think I'm going to go through withdrawals. So, until then, let's let this thread ride. We'll just discuss NASCAR, kinda like a BS thread, but with topics. Whenever a topic stalls, someone can come up with a new one to discuss.

Great idea, Mort -

I'm still a noob at NASCAR (first race in Vegas last March), so my viewpoint is absolutely from the outside looking in -- but it seems like the increased safety margin for the driver is a great reason alone for moving to the COT (with the possible positive side affect that, feeling safer, they might drive on the edge a bit more). And as we saw with the Hendrick cars leading the pack early, and Roush improving later in the season, R&D still has a significant role to play in the setup of the car.

Not many liked it at first, but that'd be true about change in general.

How is the car of the future carbed? We need fuel injection and a 10lb bottle of nitrous that the drivers have to make last through the whole race.

My understanding is the COT is being used in all races in 08 but I don't think it will change competition any theres always one or so dominate teams for a few years I think the big change will be in driver safety

Yeah, I know that, but I'm talking about how the teams have a super speedway car, a short track car, an intermediate track car, a road coarse car, etc. etc. Would they just run one chassis for all of them, or still have all those different cars?

I'm sure they will still have all the different chassis like they have now, some of the differences are also safety related

I thought when the COT was developed the idea was to run the same chassis on all racetracks whether it is a super speedway, short track or road coarse. But I could be wrong....

the idea was to create one chassis and use it for all tracks.

but you know how they are! they will create (with in the rulez) a car for each track condition.

I say the cot will ruin racing. unless! they remove restriction on the motor.
give them a block displacement size and let them have at it!

if you want to go into a turn at 200 mph then it is your life in your hands!

with motor and gear restriction on the new car they are too evenly matched. and since your not aloud to race ( rubbing is racing) then you have to give them something to make it more enjoyable for the fans I think.

The COT is supposed to be the same chassis for every track, 1 of the reasons NASCAR implemented it.

Just wait until a Toyota wins the Championship, since NASCAR has always been GM Friendly (The Fords are running toooooo Fast, we need help, IE Here run the new head that has never been on a street car yet), the rule changes after that will make your head spin

Also, NASCAR needs to go to a fuel injected computer based car, stick a chip in it for restrictor plate tracks and let them race instead of playing follow the leader.

I actually wish every race was a restrictor plate race.

It makes for more excitement and puts winning back in the hands of the drivers, their crew chiefs and the pit crews. I think it would help rid us of technology races and dollars put into that technology in turn making it harder for a Hendricks-like Monopoly. Bunch 'em up and lets see who makes it to the front.

200 lap leaders don't make for a very exciting race.

Not that I'm against it, by any means. Its time to jump into the present. The last carburetor available in the US was on the 1994 Isuzu P'up. My cousin, born in 1992, has his permit and is driving. Catch up.

They are policing it in the Super Car series in Australia now. I actually think it could be easier to police, plug the car in and it tells you what it did for the past 200 laps.
If I remember right, they even control the HP by the Sanctioning body. So if you want close racing, that would be the better way to go, he/she who drives the best wins.

I guess you're right about that. I would like to see some races decided on driver skill and strategy.

And that segues into something I was also thinking about. Each year, the top 35 teams from the year before are guaranteed a starting spot in the races, based on owner points. Is this something we should continue, because the teams have paid their dues, so to speak? Or should every season be a clean slate so some of the smaller teams will have an equal chance?

I say drop that crap all together. you want to race? then pay your fee and get out there and drive for a starting position like the old days. or like small town saturday night racing is. no one should be granteed anything until you lay down some lap times!
