Finished up a couple more items for the Christmas list:

This is a 'Chef's Bookcase' for my Wife. It is the last piece of the set consisting of the 'Baker's Trio' and the 'Cookbook Holder'. It is made of quilted Maple. The sliding center support is Cherry.

This is a jewelry box for my niece/goddaughter. It is made of Mahogany. The small splines in the corners are Maple.

It has a small tray inside and the main box lifts off the base to reveal a 'secret compartment'. It's not quite finished. I still have to line the inside bottoms with black felt like what is in the tray.

Would be cool to stick a rare earth magnet in each of the 4 bottom corners around the top and bottom halves of the secret compartment.

That way, if someone picked it up, the bottom would stay attached and not reveal the compartment so easily.

I am trying to figure out exactly how to do that. I picked up some magnets at the local hardware store, but they are too big. There is only about 1/8" between the bottom of the main box and the 'floor' of the secret compartment. I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to make this work.

Got any ideas??

I found some 3/8" round by 1/10" thick magnets at Rockler. I ordered the magnets, the magnet mounting cups and the matching washers (strike plate). This should work out great!

Thanks for the idea, Dev.

I see that you found a solution at Rockler. I was going to suggest a small forstner bit to make a little pocket for the magnets you had already.

The magnets I got locally are small rectangular pieces. It was all I could find and they are not well suited to the task. They are also not very strong and have close to zero holding power at the ends. Oh well, 2 bucks wasted, I guess.

I may still need to make a pocket to fit the magnet into. Not sure what the total thickness of magnet + magnet cup + washer will be. There is only 1/8" to work with.

With out actually seeing and measuring the magnets and washers, my thought was to drill a shallow indent into the underside of the box with a forstner bit and then mount the washer to the floor of secret compartment. It will probably be a little clunky looking since the diameter of the magnet cup will be more than the thickness of the wood it is mounted too.

Rectangular? Good excuse to buy a nice mortising machine :)

Check some of the online alarm supply places, they have a good selection of rare earth magnets in all different sizes, often with a countersunk hole in the middle for a small mounting screw.

Somewhere in the remnants of the stock I *still* have left over from my store, I have some of these about 1/4" diameter that would probably work well in your application. If I had any idea where they were, I'd send 'em to you.

You probably have them stored right next to those rack mount fans.

I think the magnets I have on order from Rockler will do the trick. I just may need to get a little creative when mounting them.
