Hello all. I'm new to forums so excuse any errors to come. I've been reading several forums on this and other sites and notice that most folks are into modifying for performance. I, on the other hand am interested in improving my mpg and passing by the pumps a little more often. Diesel here is at $3.80 gal and it's starting to hurt.

I've been researching the WVO avenue but am having troubles finding enough used veggie oil to make the addition worth while. So....now I'm investigating propane injection and/or an air/fuel injection system. My diesel mechanical knowledge is limited but I am handy at do-it-yourself applications once educated.

My superduty is stock with the exception of an Edge Attitude chip, AFE 2 stage cold air intake and 5" exhaust. Even with all this I've only gained about 1.5 mpg.

Will propane injection and/or an air flow seperation system improve mpg? What are the drawbacks? I'm willing to spend the money up front gain savings in the long run but will there be a payback?

Check out the latest parts and accessories from Truck Hownd

Propane injection will get ya more mpg, but you'll be using propane as well as diesel at the same time to operate your truck. So cost of both diesel and propane might be expensive to run. I'm running a BD torque converter and my mpg went up about 1 mpg. Might think about that. Diesel is $3.70 around here as well.

This whole discussion is about money - unless you're trying to do good for Mother Earth (in which case you probably wouldn't be driving a honking truck! ).

There are, no doubt, many mods you can add to your 7.3 (or any other engine or truck) that will increase your fuel mileage. I was able to see an average 18-mpg in mixed driving with my F-150 5.4L Supercrew. But to get that gain (2-3mpg) I installed several thousand dollars worth of goodies. Luckily those parts were from sponsors because had I paid for them myself I would have never gotten back what I paid out.

If you're going for economy - the first thing you need to do is calculate how many miles it will take to see a return on your investment. If, on the other hand, you want to increase your performance and make tons of black smoke - GO FOR IT!

well, Tom's about got it covered.

and it looks like you do too.

The main things you can do are to help the engine breathe better - intake, exhaust. And a litte more timing (courtesy of the Edge) will help with mileage too.

I would suggest against propane, as they have a propensity to break rods in the PSD.

If you want a propane kit, I've got the MSD / Superchips Digital Propane kit, brand new.

They retail for $680+

I'll sell you mine for $575.

Use synthetic oil everywhere. We switched my boss's to Amsoil and got a very noticable gain in mpg's. Also i think it has to do with driving style, put your right foot on jenny craig!

Great feedback! Of all the forums I've submitted questions to this one has definitely gotten more feedback here.

Rausch Baby: I've considered the synthetic oil but decided against it due to the frequency of my oil changes (every 3,000 miles) at only $10.00 per change at my local dealer (yeah...only $10.00).

Carnival Freak: You're obviously into h.p. rather than mpg. I'm a daily driver looking to save $$$ as well as to stop putting $$$ in the ragheads pockets. Depoyed overseas to Afghanistan and Iraq and not planning to give up my US made truck (for the Japs) or financing radicals. Thanks for the info though.

DrSpeed: If propane is worth the investment, why are you willing to sell me yours? Thanks for the offe but I think I'll pass. Not sure it the investment would pay off.

ford_trck: Thanks for the reply.

DrSpeed: Thanks for the reply.

Lootens: Thanks for the reply. I've decided against propane. Stupid thought to begin with. Not only would I be supporting the ouil industry by buying diesel but adding to it with the propane.

EVERYONE: It looks like I'm doing as well as I can expect with diesel and will accept that for now. I will however consider and look into WVO as an alternative. Thanks again all.

no problemo dood.

the reason I'm selling is the kit is that it's for a 7.3, and I now have a Cummins under the hood of my Ford. I never had time to install it before I blew it up!

WVO...have you done the math to determine how many miles it'll take to recover your costs? It would take me 30,000 miles to break even.

Wow you can't beat 10.00$ oil changes. Maybe just switch tranny, transfer, and axels. We just did my boss'es motor and didn't notice a big change but a month later i changed the rest of the drivetran and mpg's jumped up. It still didn't become a 4popper honda but it averaged 3-4 mpg better.

holy shit...that's impressive.

I notice no change when I switched out ALL the lubricants (engine - Valvoline Cummins Blue Extreme full synthetic, Redline for: tranny, t-case, axles) in my truck.

I think 3-4 is a bit generous, no? not to be an asshole or nothin...

Amsoil series 2000 gear oil, I noticed a difference in my 92 Wrangler too but my speedo was so screwed up from runnin 35" tires. BTW we also installed a Green air filter at same time. I am a big believer in synthetics.

Another thing my 03 jeep i didn't notice an increase in mpg's when i switched it to syn. Wonder why, seems synthetics work better in some vehicles than others.
