| Yeah, that's getting a little bit toasty!
The SMC fan control thing is handy, get the latest version which displays your CPU temp in the menubar.
My CPU tends to float between 115F and 130F. IMO, 85C or even 80C is really pushing the safety factor on these. I try to keep mine propped up a bit in the back, so more air can flow under/around it. That seems to help a lot.
Unless you've REALLY cooked it, I doubt there is any chance of damage to the chip. Mine has "forgotten" to go to sleep a couple of times in my backpack, and has come out VERY hot, with no ill effects.
The quick/dirty way to throttle the CPU is to remove the battery. It draws power from the battery if the magsafe adapter can't meet the CPU demands. If you remove the battery, it will automatically reduce the CPU speed so that it is not maxing out the A/C power draw, leaving some headroom for reserve.

Thanks Dev,
Yeah... I just off the phone with Intel out of AZ (since Apple is no help). They say that the Core2duo mobile processor is good up to 100 C with no ill-effects (mine 85C). I only see those temps when the processor is maxed out while running Handbrake (1-3% idle). It usually takes me up to 2hrs to convert a movie...then my CPU temps settle down to 117 F (48C).
On a side note how hot does your magsafe adapter get? Mine gets hot as hell when the CPU is maxing out.
