Hey Dev,

Got a question for you. You know a lot more about this than I do. Anyway here are the specs on my laptop:

MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I am converting video with Handbrake and it maxes out the CPU. During that time my temps are as follows.... I am particlarly concerned about the CPU temp. I have heard that this chip is designed to work up to 100 Celcius, but I have heard that thermal throttling occurs at 85 C.

1. Is this true?
2. If so how can you tell if there is any damage?
3. Is there a way to de-clock the speed while running Handbrake?

Are these safe temps? (these temps are with the fan running about 4200rpms) I just installed SMC Fan Control and will manually set the rpms to 6000 on the next go-round.

CPU-A - 185 F (85 C)
GPU Diode - 175 F
GPU Heatsink - 155 F
Heatsink A - 146 F
Heatsink B - 117 F
Enclosure Bottom - 97 F
Memory Controller - 131 F
Hardrive - 103 F

Check out the latest parts and accessories from Truck Hownd

Yeah, that's getting a little bit toasty!

The SMC fan control thing is handy, get the latest version which displays your CPU temp in the menubar.

My CPU tends to float between 115F and 130F. IMO, 85C or even 80C is really pushing the safety factor on these. I try to keep mine propped up a bit in the back, so more air can flow under/around it. That seems to help a lot.

Unless you've REALLY cooked it, I doubt there is any chance of damage to the chip. Mine has "forgotten" to go to sleep a couple of times in my backpack, and has come out VERY hot, with no ill effects.

The quick/dirty way to throttle the CPU is to remove the battery. It draws power from the battery if the magsafe adapter can't meet the CPU demands. If you remove the battery, it will automatically reduce the CPU speed so that it is not maxing out the A/C power draw, leaving some headroom for reserve.

Thanks Dev,

Yeah... I just off the phone with Intel out of AZ (since Apple is no help). They say that the Core2duo mobile processor is good up to 100 C with no ill-effects (mine 85C). I only see those temps when the processor is maxed out while running Handbrake (1-3% idle). It usually takes me up to 2hrs to convert a movie...then my CPU temps settle down to 117 F (48C).

On a side note how hot does your magsafe adapter get? Mine gets hot as hell when the CPU is maxing out.

I have to admit, I don't usually check it. Right now with my CPU at 51C, it's barely warmish.

Yeah, same here...check it next time your CPU is maxing out for a period of time. It gets so hot I can actually hear it when I hold it up to my ear.

Denny... your oriental, you should be able to understand this conversation

Sorry...

Diesel, turbo, exhaust brake, winch, tractor pull, limited-slip, traction bars.

Hopefully that resets that balance for you.

Denny, you're the only Asian guy I know that speaks more redneck than tech.

Denny's programed to lean more toward the redneck side by his employer. He works for the company that owns Kenworth and Peterbilt fer Pete's sake!

Been doing good JD...how about yourself? I've been pretty busy with school here...and getting ready to move to VA in DEC. I'll be stationed at Fort Monroe.
