I was just wondering what is the safe level of boost to be running on the 7.3's before head gaskets or bolt stretch occur. Right now it's running 35 psi with no troubles. The 02 I had would only run at 28.

Check out the latest parts and accessories from Truck Hownd

i cant even think of a time ive heard of head gasket issues with the 7.3L

usually internal problems. The only one weve pushed power to broke a rocker arm, but i would think your problems would be with PMRs...Denny, am i wrong?

Head gasket issues usually come with the addition of drugs: Nitrous oxide or propane. That's when you start blowing head gaskets.

As for boost levels, I would start studding the heads at 35 psi.

What kind of turbo are you running? The stock turbo's efficiency map starts to fall off at 28 psi. Anything after that, you're just super heating the intake air, so even though you are increasing your MAP, the volume of air is still the same. Remember PV=nRT? Yep, that's is.

Rocker arms come with too much RPM, and sometimes timing.

With the 99-01 motors, they have the forged rods, so you can run more boost and timing without windowing the crankcase. The PMR's tend to go when you hit about 400hp to the ground.

I've broken a rocker arm with too much RPM.

As far as I know this truck is totaly stock except for what I put in it. It has a ts performance chip, afe stage 2 intake, and 5 inch exhaust. Stock the truck was running 28psi and now it consistantly running 34 and peaks at 35. EGT are staying very reasonable. The truck won't hit 1300 degrees until I'm midway through fourth.

Check the wastegate tube. Make sure that's plugged in. Overboost wil create excessive wear on the journal/thrust bearings on the factory turbo, and destroy the shaft and/or seals.

I never thought about that. But if I stay in it until about 70 the check engine light comes on and the boost will go down to 28 psi. I don't know maybe I just have a hot rod 7.3

when the MAP sensor sees more than 30 psi, it starts to defuel the truck to prevent engine damage. i have a boost fooler that doesn't let the sensor see more than 25 psi to maintain maximum fueling.

20 bones shipped and it's yours.

the SES light is an overboost fault code.

I don't want a boost fooler but I may someone that does. The 02's light would come on the second the boost hit 28 or 29 psi through a mechanical gauge. The gauge in this 99 is from ts and is tapped into the map signal wire. So I kind wonder if the map is saying one reading and a mechanical would say a little different?

hmm. so, how does this gauge from TS work? it reads the 0-5 volt or OBD2 signal in a digital display?

if you ever need parts to convert the turbo to a 99.5+ system, let me know.

Thats the link for the install manual on project JAKD. It is definatly an easy install.
What is the difference between the early 99 and later trucks anyway. Mine was build 10/98 if I remember right. The turbo on this truck is a lot louder than it was on the 02 and seams to spools faster

That reads off the MAP sensor. I'd still run a gauge that accurately reads off the pressure in the intake spider.

The differences between the 99 and the 99.5 is that the 99.5+ have a larger turbo (with different turbo pedistal), different intake spider that is more efficient.

It's a simple mod.

We always talk shit about each other's trucks.

I've driven and worked on Project JAKD, hung out with Bear Hunter, etc..

And hung out with the idiot known as DrSpeed....although I've never seen his SD in person and he's never seen my 01

Denny and Kevin are real good buds from when they were both in Houston.

Just some playful ribbing.

HAHAHA...yeah, I finally got to meet the man behind the machine just this past spring when work brought me out to Chicago. Too bad I haven't seen his truck yet...one of these days.

My truck...is in hiding...=)

We sure don't pull any punches when talking smack about each other's rigs!! AHHAHAHA

Denny did get to see my work machine though....the 07 since I was too lazy to pull my 01 out of the garage and let it warm up

The best shit talking was a three way phone call between myself, Denny and Kevin.....when Kevin was planning out the mods for Project JAKD. Denny and I had some good ideas to save Kevin some coin....and I think he started cussing us out

I have to agree with DC
I've had a Ranger, F-150, 250, and two 350's superduty's I'd definatly say that anything less than a superduty is gay.
