How often is considered normal to get ball joints replaced in a truck? I had them replaced on my truck just after I bought it (thank god for the warranty)about 4 years ago, and had one replaced just over a month ago. I know I will be getting the other replaced soon.

Are you useing GM factory parts? If so that may be your problem. I know my brother had problem with his F150 before and after it was lifted. He switched to MOOG parts and hasn't had any problems since as far as I know. Just a thought.

Have you had it aligned regularly? Generally if your alignment is off, it will throw off everything else placing increased wear on your ball joints. Bryan posted good information about the stock joints compared to aftermarkets. But even the aftermarkets will go out fast if the truck isn't properly balanced/aligned.

I'm not sure whether this applies or not, but I just made a post relative to aftermarket front-end upgrades specific to the 3500 series. I don't know what series you have but it is GM.
I've heard that at least on the 3500 series that due to the vehicle size and weight that some of the stock components allow more flex than should be allowed, causing a ripple effect of premature wear on other parts, including tires. Last I heard, GM hasn't issued any upgrade or recalls but I am trying to track down whether there is an aftermarket upgrade available. I am experiencing premature wear and do indeed feel some "give" in the front end under more extreme road conditions. Nothing that should be considered extreme though - just over rougher roads or hard cornering.

I fix the vehicles for our utility Co. All the factory parts never last as long as MOOG. The last vehicle of MINE that needed new suspension pieces saw over 75K, and 5 years on the dual idler arms the chevy astros had. { MOOG problem solver }.
