I have an issue with my 1988 Chevy truck. About 6 weeks ago, when the fuel gauge said I had around 1/8 of a tank of gas...the truck acted ilke the tank was on empty. It would start to buck and the only way to remedy the problem was to add gas to the tank. A few weeks ago the same thing would happen when the tank was 1/4 full. This past week, the truck starts to act up when the fuel gauge shows that the tank is about 3/8's full. The other day I had a mechanic replace the fuel pump and the filter. He said that when he changed the pump. the tank was about half full. Today, even with the new pump, the truck acts like it is running out of gas with the fuel gauge showing it has about 3/8's of a tank full. I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions as to what may be going on. I am bewildered. Thanks

Bad injector? Secondary fuel pump starving the engine out?

I should have been more specific. The truck starts to buck and acts like it is running out of gas. If I do not add any gas...the engine will stop running. What is most baffling is that as time passes by from week to week the fuel gauge shows that more gas is in the fuel tank when the truck acts up. However...I know that their is plenty of gas in the tank. Thanks for your reply!

Weird. Its almost like there is something floating around in the tank that is clogging it. Its odd that it would only do it at a certain level of fuel.

Kind of a dumb question, but was it an in tank pump?

Yes...it is an intank pump. Several from around here have said that there may be a sensor of some kind in the tank. It has me totally baffled. Years ago I knew a guy who purchased a new truck which would stop running when the fuel was a certain level in the fuel tank. If he would let it sit for a while...it would run for a bit and then stall again. Under warranty the Chevy garage changed just about everything in the fuel system. Finally when the tank was pulled and someone looked inside they found a piece of paper. Evidentally...the truck would stall when the piece of paper would cover the pump intake due to the suction. WHen the truck sat...the paper would start floating again. Only to be sucked back to the intake when the truck was restarted.

did you change the fuel filter while evrything was apart?

might need a fuel filter after stiring evrything up in the tank.

Yeap.... new fuel filter was added at the same time the pump was changed. I am still baffled with the problem.
